For those who didn't read the full race announcement thread, the race is
today, NOW, Saturday, the 11th.  Sorry for the mistype of the day, but the
date is correct  :)

  Server is up, fyi.

Only one caution the entire race, and I gotta say that bew*** laps 7
and 25 was the best racing I've ever seen online.  IMHO, the 9 and 45
cars did an exceptional job.

Outstanding race.

Any way I can get a copy of the replay of those 18 laps? I forgot to save

would be great.

Not for me, I was disco'd during my pit stop :-o Once I got back in I spent
the last half of the race cruising around all by myself without a car in
sight. Early laps were fun though, like John said.

I thought 313, 11, 45, and Steve did a great job. I know I felt comfortable
running close with them immediately even though they never raced in RASCAR
races before. It was easy to see they were good.

Steve Blankenshi

RASCAR Race

by Steve Blankenshi » Mon, 13 Jan 2003 14:26:54

Thanks John, that was good fun.  And everyone did a great job; especially
Colin, who was a couple tenths quicker than anyone in clean air.  Gotta
figure out how he does that. ;-)  But not so exceptional for the 9 car;
highlights of my blundering path to 6th.

1. Completely un-aided, I brought out the only caution by spinning out of
4th on lap 3.  It should've dawned on me then that the big red Dodge was no
Lotus and backing it in was unwise.  If that wasn't bad enough already, I
collected one car directly in the process, ruining his day and causing mucho
scatterage and mayhem behind.  My bad; apologies to JLe and anyone else who
was affected.

2. After going green again, I nearly took you out when I got into a bit of a
tank-slapper out of 2 trying to get a run underneath you.  Nice save, BTW!
Finally had some good clean laps, especially once I figured out the
trail-braking, late-apex thing wasn't working and ended up in the lead after
the front-runners pitted about mid-way.

3. Of course I then wasted about five seconds or so by staying out to the
bitter end of my pit window, running mid 54's on toasted tires for 5 or 6
laps.  Duhhh.

4. Now it gets good.  As the crew were yelling for me to come in, I
completely spaced out my pit entry and grabbed the brakes too late, sliding
into the pits with 4 locked tires at uh... 121mph.  Oops!  That blew at
least one tire, so it was a good thing I was getting some new ones... ;-)
It also earned me a nice 15-second penalty, which ended up being 1 second
more than the gap from 6th to 2nd.  Should've sped on in once I'd blown it;
probably would've saved another four or five seconds.  Double Duhhh.

5. Finally, I miscalculated the finish by 0.05 sec.  C'est la vie... ;-)

Yep, a fraught race, as Sam Posey would say.  But great fun; I hope I can
make more of them.  Well done all, and thanks to John P. for hosting!

Cheers,

SB

Thanks, GH! We've had quite a bit of success in Rascar races - Ginger's had
quite a few wins, I've won a couple and Neil Charlton won too, I think...
As an aside, if any reputable racers would like to race in FFRL (
http://ffrl.racesimcentral.com ) I'd be more than interested. We've got 8
races to go this season, so it's a  perfect time to come in, have a look
round, and be ready for season 4 which starts with N2003 in April. Races are
at 2030 Euro time on Mondays (which is 1430 Eastern time, so only jobless
Americans need apply!)
Anyway, have a look round, and mail me if any of you fancy it. :-))))

I went by you on the low side as you were coming to a stop after
spinning, and just barely clipped you (enough to damage my car).
Then, JLe tagged you pretty good.  I'm surprised that you had much of
a car left at all, but for the rest of the race, you dind't even show
any damage that I could see.  This is another great example of the
sim's crappy damage model.  :-)

It was definitely exciting.  I personally think I make some of the
most amazing saves in the game.  I don't know if it's because I'm a
good driver or just used to trying to recover from a spin, loop,
wreck, slide, etc...

This ain't GPL... :)

I was down to 3 pounds of fuel pressure before I stopped. I stayed
out long enough to even lead a lap (I stopped on the lap after you).

What the heck happened to you after turn 4?  You had me beat for 5th
by a country mile and for no apparent reason, you just slowed down.
I was ready to settle for 6th place.

Back behind you (with about 8 laps to go), Brian Farmer was real slow
going into a turn, with Jan and me right on his butt.  Brian drifted
high into the turn, and by that time, I'd snuck a fender under Jan.
Jan got snookered in behind Brian, and I passed 'em both in the
chute.

Like I said before, that was some of the best racing I've ever seen
online (in the Nascar sims).

We need more people like you (and the 45 and 11 cars) in RASCAR. Of
course, that means I'll finish that much further back most of the
time, but hey, it'll be fun anyway. :)
