New to GPL and the list, so I apologize if this one had been asked:

I have a standard 16bit Soundblaster-compatible chip on my machine (Compaq
Deskpro with built-in sound), and all the cars in GPL sound great except for
the Ferrari - there is all kinds of background noise and garbage coming out
of the speakers.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there a replacement
sound file for that car?

Thanks.

The Ferrari sound is *ahem* a little rough :)  but you shouldnt
be hearing garbage.  Are you using head phones?

I use a SB AWE64 and large PC speakers and -- well --
really can't hear anything that I would call garbage ;)

Jason.

The Ferarri is rough, but thats almost exactly how it sounded in real life.

As for the garbage your hearing...it might be feedback b/c the speakers dont
like that praticular sound.  You might try changing the speaker setting within
windows (bass, trebble, etc.) if it lets you.  Thats about all i could think
of.  Hope this helps.

Hehe.  I don't think there's anything wrong with your sound.  That's what
the Ferrari sounds (sounded?) like.   Either you love it, or hate it.
Actually, I noticed recently, while watching a thing on the Discovery
Channel about Fast Cars with Jay Leno narrating, that the sound of the
Ferrari in GPL sounds exactly like the one profiled on the TV program.
There's one very short shot of the Ferrari accelerating from a stop with the
camera and mic setting on the pavement right behind it.  Sounded to me
exactly like the one in GPL.  In fact it sounded more like the GPL sound
than the sound of the Ferrarii in the movie Grand Prix.

Thanks for all the responses - sounds like I might be able to clean it up a
bit with the tone controls, but I'll just have to live with it the way it
is!

Hmmm, now that's one I've never tried - it sounds revolting!

Or you could do what I did and replace it with the stock sound. It's
sacrilege I know <g>, but the added feedback I get from a clearer sound
allowed me to pick up over a second a lap at most places. I'm now
running 1m48s with it at Mexico, 3m20's at Spa, 1m05's at the Glen, etc
etc etc.

Cheers!

Actaully its kinda a neat sound, tho it can get to be annoying.  I have
hewland gears in my Toyota gear box and it makes a very distinctive sound
compared to a standard street gearbox.

There was a thread or two on this right after GPL was released, but I didn't
pay a lot of attention because (although annoying) I wasn't driving the Ferrari
very often.  I noticed what Skip is describing, too ...

To me, it sounds like listening to an old, dirty LP.  (Anybody old enough to
remember that technology?)  There are hisses, clicks, pops and other
high-frequencly noise that have nothing to do with the inherent, distinctive
sound of the engine -- that wonderful, raucous, two-toned wail.

I notice just traces of this in a couple of the other engine sounds, but as you
wind them up, the "noise" disappears in the increased volume of the engine.  In
the Ferrari, I can hear hiss and clicks even when the engine is red-lined.

I want to recall that someone clever succeeded in "cleaning up" the .wav, but I
now don't remember who or where.  Does anybody out there recall?  It really is
a shame that the coolest engine sound is marred with this noise, and like Skip,
I'd really love a solution.

Incidentally, I have a Gateway, with ENSONIQ AudioPCI and Boston Acoustics
speakers with powered sub-woofer -- I don't have a similar problem with other
.wav files or music for that matter.

Thanks!

Kurt and Skip are right, there is definitely some serious distortion in
the sound above and beyond the screaming wail of the engine.  I love the
sound of the Ferrari, but it certainly isn't as clearly recorded as the
others.

My audio system is a Turtle Beach Montego and Altec 495's (Dell OEM -
pseudo USB, with subwoofer).

Go to Control Panel - Multimedia - Audio tab - Advanced Properties of the
playback device - Performance tab  and move the hardware accelleration
slider to the left one step. Repeat until your sound is ok.
That should do the trick.

It's a plebeian, domestic little number, but I think you'll be amused by
its presumption.
