NR2002 - Talladega Qualifying Setup

by ThreeWid » Tue, 02 Apr 2002 01:00:53

I've been working for what seems like an eternity now on a good qualifying
setup.  If you are struggling you might want to read on.  I'm hoping that we
can share some info and crack this mystery.

My best time so far is 52.053 (70 degrees no wind), which I suppose is very
close to 184, I don't track mph anyway.  However, I know that some have
cracked well into the 51s.

I have the front end height at max, soft springs (450 and 900), shocks (4-9)
and (5-9), wedge 85 lbs, max camber front and rear, front weight at 1850
lbs, front sway bar at max, rear sway bar at min, LR track bar 14, RR track
bar 7, max psi, caster (2.00 3.00) though I'm not sure if caster has really
factored much here so far, 4th Gear at 2.95, 100% tape of course.

Even if you run a less-than-perfect lap with this setup you will get at
least 52.2.  With this setup, if you so much as touch the wall at any point
your motor will blow before the end of the run.  Also, when you make
adjusments to this, any bit of drag you add will also blow the motor.  Very
fine line there.

I have yet another setup that also consistently runs 52.0xx, only difference
there is how it uses the front springs and shocks and also has max wedge.

This setup is by definition tight.  The theory seems to be that with NR2002
you have to get air off the rear spoiler.  Since you cannot adjust rear
shocks, you have to raise the front end higher.  This goes against the
theory of having the front end as low as possible.  I have tried running a
lower front end with stiffer springs but that proved much less effective.
In N4, that was the strategy but it no longer works now.  The 55 degree
spoiler is really playing a factor in NR2002.

This is the base setup others have supposedly used to get the sub 52 times.
It holds the speed just fine in the corners (179), but the issue is a lack
of 1 or 2 mph on the straights.  What could I do to this setup to squeeze
another mph or 2 of straightaway speed?  If your car never hits 185 at the
end of the backstretch you are still lacking somewhere.  I have to assume
that there is some way to reduce drag just a touch more.

I have tried changing everything imaginable so far and cannot make it
faster.

Thanks,

ThreeWide
