Engine at Talladega (NR2002)

Yesterday I had a sort of wierd occurance - during a 38 lap race at
Talladega, my engine blew with like 10 to go..

I was using the default Fast setup with 1 mod, I changed the tape % from 60
to 70. When the engine went, the water temp pointer was pointing pretty much
straight up..  With that info, does anyone know what would have caused this
to happen?  or could it have been just a freak occurance?

I wish I could see if it would happen again, but i'm not that good at 'dega,
and that was like the only time i've lasted that long :)

Also, my car seems really slow at talladega, I have to turn the opponent
strength to around 89% to be even remotely competitive.. any ideas on what I
could do to get more speed?

thanks alot

Did you lift when shifting? If not then you should. If you do lift then it
was just a random breakdown.

If you cant keep up at 100% there must be something worng with your wheel.
Maybe your not getting 100% throttle.

Same thing happened to me qualifying at Daytona.  Water temperature about
175, car flat out on the back straight and... silence from the engine.
Thankfully I'd already pulled a fast enough lap for a front row position,
but I was pretty cautious with that car in the race...

The only thing I did note was that oil temperature was sky high... the
gauge off the end of the dial.  My guess was that it's some kind of
reliability problem.  Anybody else had car failures they didn't expect?

I had the default qual setting blow the engine on my 2nd lap.  No
speed-shifting(auto-gears).  70deg temp, no weird weather.  This was either
Tally or Daytona, don't remember.  I've only run one online race there, so I
don't know if it would happen all the time.  Anyone else run into that?

Okay, so the Detroit Tigers finally won a game.  But is 1-11 *really* something
to get e***d over...?

I have been having the exact same thing happening in GPL.  Using the F1
Lotus 49 car, auto shift help on, at Watkins Glen during testing the car
keeps blowing up in a lap or two.

I think it's because my wheel has still not been returned after warranty
replacement  (because of broken spring during the first two weeks of use)
so I am using a Logitech wingman game pad with "tilt" steering.  My steering
is analog (can hold a variable turn angle) but my gas and brake are digital
(either on or off).  So there is no real way to lift during shifts (until I
start using manual shifting. ( coming real soon now))

This didn't use to happen in NR2002 when using the same controller set up.
Could race against the ai in 40 lap races and finish with no mechanical
problems of any kind. . .   well unless tire wear is considered mechanical.

Can't you just 'lift' your finger of the gas button?

Whoops - I just mentioned that.  I was so surprised I didn't notice what the
gauges were.  I *think* I was driving a Ford, dammit...<G>

I am talking about a location on the course where I can go flat out, for
example one of the two long sweeping curves at Spa.  For some reason if I
just hold my line and keep my gas applied I don't spin out or drift to the
outside but the engine will blow.

I think it happens when my "auto shift" happens and a spike in rpms must
occur during the shift.  It is difficult to lift before an "auto shift"
because one has to anticipate the shift and if one lifts before the shift
then often the the shift doesn't happen because of the lowering of rpm's and
one just slows down.

It happens more often on downhill turns for some reason.  I hear a high rev
slipping (screaming ?) sound and then I see the light.  Unfortunately it
isn't from seeing the answer to the problem but rather the light in my
mirrors coming from the engine flash.  :O)

I might be wrong about all of this.  I am just trying to find a reasonable
explanation.  ( I mean a reason other then that I just don't know what I'm
doing. )

:O)
