NR2002 Engine sound too quiet?

by Marc Collin » Thu, 03 Jan 2002 14:40:38

I like the new sounds very much, but does anyone else find the engine sound
too quiet relative to the other sounds?  I don't want the car next to me to
sound louder than my own engine and with my engine at 100%, I would
practically have to turn off the other sounds for it to be the ***
sound that it should be.

Hi Marc,

I hope Papy doesn't use only those 4 global sliders for sound ratios in the
full version. They're clearly insufficient. However, since you can unpack
the sound.dat, there's nothing to prevent you from adjusting the sound level
directly within the wav files.

There are also ways to give these sounds more pressure, and I'm sure someone
will do that, too. I've done it to try them in N4, and I can say that the
sounds do have potential for some pretty good grumble :-)

Yea, I thought the same thing. Great sound, but just not loud enough.

How do you unpack them? I tried dooDAT but it doesn't handle it. I would love
to get that engine sound into GPL.

Increase the value of the "RelativeVol_PlayerEngine" setting in the [Sound
Options] section of your PLAYER.INI.

NR2002 Engine sound too quiet?

by The Other Larr » Fri, 04 Jan 2002 04:55:27

It's quiet because all of the low-end Bass components of the sound are
either not being played, or simply aren't there.

Man, I HOPE it's not because they simply are not there.

My sub sits idle in NR2002, while it rumbles like hell in N4.

It's not an acceptable trade-off, IMHO, if this turns out to be the case.
We need those low-frequency components of the sound for it to really be
right.

But, then again, this IS a demo :)  Only Eric knows for sure :)

Very interesting...and Papy-like to have these fine adjustments.  But why is
there almost a parallel set of adjustments to the menu ones?  I would have
been happy to just be able to slide the slider a bit higher on the screen.
I don't see the point of limiting the engine sound so dramatically in the
.ini file as the default.

Thanks for this tip, though!

Because Papyrus is slowly stopping to care about scalability and in-game
customability (ex: the number of options in the core.ini).  Well, they want
to appeal the most to the simple gamer, who would be overwhelmed with all
those buttons (and now with NR2002, all those annoying clicks) <snickers>.
At least they still give us those options.

Ex : We need to exit the sim so that they restart, why can't we open up a
console like so many other titles on the market?  Just look at Unreal
Tournament, it's trully a great gUI.

Thanks again, Eric.  I set it to 1.0 instead of 0.25 or whatever it was, and
everything is perfect (for my ears).
