When running the game I get a crackling or static type sound from my
speakers...any idea if I need better speakers or a sound adjusment to make?

Running 3d sound............................

You might list your system details, specifically what soundcard, mb, cpu,
you have running.
First thing you might try is looking for any updated soundcard drivers for
your soundcard.

I have an Audigy....I could hear 'something' on the right
speaker....spacially it seemed to be further right or outside of the racing
noises.  Using info from  here I changed the buffer setting in one of the
config files...seems to have lessened it greatly.  But...I also have heard
with the Audi gear noise which I missed before with my Sante Fe.  Especially
at Watkins Glen, you can hear the whine of the straight cut gears...Not as
pronounced as say....STCC2....but it made for a nice bonus...

The Audigy seems to have a certain risk of producing sound anomalies
described as 'snap, crackle and plop' by those who get them. I have another
anomaly in that from time to time the sound changes somehow, sounds a lot
more raspy and less pronounced than normally.

I hope new drivers will cure this prob. Drivers which are overdues as I've
had the Audigy for somewhat in the ballpark of 6 months, and it still
doesn't work flawlessly.

In the replay, btw, I do get a certain amount of crackling. Over in the
Audigy newsgroup, there's been quite a few users reporting such issues.

Like you say, the Audigy also provides a very detailed and clear overall
sound, with excellent 3D detail, which is why I've kept it in. If it works
fine, it's great.

Have you tried turning down the hardware acceleration on that card?  Seems to cure a lot of the problems with Creative sound cards.

Thanks for the hint Chris!

I haven't tried that because slowing my computer down just doesn't 'feel'
right ;-)

Hope it fixes it for you, Joachim.  A lot of the sound (and some video) problems are being caused by Creative cards running with full acceleration.  It is similar to the old problem on Windows 95 (I think) where a lot of people had erratic mouse jumps, and it was the video acceleration being on full.  A couple clicks to the left, the mouse behavior was normal.

I didn't have that problem with my SBLive, but did have it with the built in
sound card (c media) on my new SD7 motherboard. I'm running Win98SE. I like
the c media better so I stuck with it and downloaded what appears to be
older drivers from the c media web site (not the Abit site). I used the VxD
drivers and that helped a lot. Now I only get the problem sometimes and just
at the very start of a race. Otherwise it's gone. My mouse also locked up
when I went back to the desktop, and that's mostly cleared up too. It was
definitely tied into the sound issue.
