NR2002 sound crackling

Has anyone else experienced a lot of crackling / static noise in NR2002?

I always thought it was my 5+ year old speakers..but about 2 weeks ago I got
some brand new Altec Lansing 641s, and it still makes crackling noises, in
the exact same places..

Before I was using a SB Live soundcard, and now i'm using the onboard sound
w/ my Asus A7V8X .. is this sound issue a common thing, or do I have a
possible problem with my speakers / sound card?

thanks for any help

It's very common Mike.  Especially with SBLives and Via based
Motherboards.  But since you tried the onboard sound too, that's one less
thing to try and change.
Use google groups to search ras for gpl and n2k2 sound problems.  There
are many many things to try.  good luck

A VERY common problem...I got some improvement by turning down the volumn in
Windows and using the speaker volumn control...of the MANY things suggested to
me in various forums...this was the only one that really helped any...good
luck...

I missed the original posting, but I had the same problem and here are a few
things I was told to try to take care of it:

1) Make sure you have the most recent patch (1.1.0.2)
http://www.sierra.com/download/display_results.php?ftp_id=5285
2) As previously suggested, turn down the Windows volume
3) In the Windows Control Panel, click on MultiMedia, on the Audio Tab click
on Advanced Properties, on the Performance tab take the Hardware
Acceleration slider down a notch or two from Full.
4) In the Nascar Racing 2002 Season directory, open Core.ini with NotePad
and change the Sound settings.  I don't remember what I was told to change,
but here are my current settings:

[Sound]
allow_buffer_recreation=1                ; re-create sound buffers to
improve quality
convert_3d_stereo=0                      ; convert stereo to mono for
positional sounds in 3d mode
enable_3d_interpolation=1                ; enable volume interpolation for
3d sound
force_default_buffer_size=3              ; Set forced buffer size in 1/36
second units. Define a value of 3 or larger
force_min_readahead=1.000000             ; Set forced read ahead, expressed
in 1/36 second ticks.
interpolationValue=0

Hope that helps.

"Gary Wampler"
I don't remember what I was told to change,

One thing you can do when you make changes to files like the core.ini is
place the OLD values in the comment area.  So if the old value for the line
shown above was zero you could try this:

[Sound]
allow_buffer=recreation=1                ; recreate sound buffers to improve
quality.  old value=0.

That way if you need to go back later, or want to remember just what you
changed, it's there for you in the file.
