Is 30 FPS a good frame rate in N4?

by m.. » Sun, 03 Feb 2002 00:01:20

Hey:

I got N4 for Christmas and have loved it, howerver I noticed last
night the frame rate did not seem as smooth. Is 30 a good rate? I have
dell 1.6 w/ 64MB video card and 512 RAM.

Thanks

If it doesn't seem smooth it's probably not consistently 30.  I find
consistent fps more important than "peak" fps.  Example: GPL runs great for
me since it's consistent 36 fps (36 fps is max for GPL).  A few years ago I
would run it in the low 30's "peak" with many dips in the low 20's and
sometimes even into the ***s.  This affected my driving significantly
because those dips were not just visually distracting they were hazardous.
;0)  I would make quick wheel adjustments under slow fps which resulted in
the wrong input for the situation (out of sync steering).  More often than
not under slow fps I would lose control in a tight spot.

My rule of thumb is consistently over 30 is mandatory and 40+ is ideal (36+
is available in most other games like F1 2001 & N4).

Repeated tests have shown that the human eye is incapable of noticing a
difference once the rate rises above 30fps. Getting a high FPS has turned
into a testosterone thing with some simmers.
If you want a steady rate, and you've got a potent PC, try turning vsync
back on.

You may need to turn of AntiAliasing and Vertical sync in the video
properties. Even with a 1.6 intel should run faster than that depending on
what video card you have.

I must disagree based on what I've read (motion blur) and my own perception
when comparing 30 fps to 60 fps.  Humans can perceive the difference between
30 and 60 fps.

Here's an interesting piece on the topic:

Interesting article. Maybe I'll have to revise what may be common
misperception; for video games, lacking the motion blur phenomenon, 72fps
may be the ideal rate.
In N4 with my system, 850/256/32mb, 40fps is about the best I can do with
1024x768 and full draw ahead. (Sob).

agreed. I have the same dell 1.6 gig, with only a 32mg card and i get 80 fps
at 1024x768, so the poster has some tweaking to do....

not true.  the human eye stops noticing _flickering_ at a moderately
low frame rate limit.

good advice, though. :)

I have a comment on that article:

anyone who thinks a movie in a theater is smooth needs to have their
eyes examined.

and they're 48 FPS, not 24.

ahhhmmm,

what planet is the film industry whose
products you've been watching hails
from?

where's this info of 48 or is it in your
head and therefore becomes fact?

just wondering ;-)

Yeah, but N4 looks like ***in anything less than 1600x1200 ;-)

No, seriously, it's beyond me why anybody would prefer 1024x768 and 80 fps
over a higher resolution and a more modest frame rate.

Best regards,

it's in the manuals of all the film projectors I've used.  it's
even in the rec.arts.movies.tech FAQ
<URL:http://www.faqs.org/faqs/movies/tech/part1/>

# standard IMAX (tm) , like almost every other format, runs at 24 fps.
# Supposedly this could give a clearer picture with fewer
# `strobing'-type artifacts of the usual double-bladed shutter used
# for 35mm and standard 65mm (Showscan (tm) and IMAX-HD (tm) both use
# projector shutters which show each image only once) and other
# shortcomings of the 24 fps standard, in which the projector normally
# shows each frame twice (using a double-bladed shutter, which makes
# one revolution for each frame), which reduces apparent flicker
# somewhat.  Formats using the higher frame rate do not appear to
# flicker anyway, and thus do not need this `fix.'

and now you know. :)

sorry to be dense, but i could swear the above info says
imax is like "almost every other format."  but i can see
where yr coming from if equipment is now going to start
showing the same frame twice.  so it's a 24 fps x 2.  so
seeing the same frame twice within the same period
constitutes 48 fps.   hmmmmm.  still sounds like 24
individual fps.

could be a different language than i'm used to.  help me
understand.

but please......be gentle.....

okay okay, there's the line you meant me to read!

now i know which planet.  that not industry standard planet.
i know that planet well,,,,, (okay, i've heard of it and
have been accused of being from there).  thanx for the info.
