I have found that loading the UNIVBE Vesa Driver boosts frame rates by
about thirty per cent on my system  :>

My system is Pentium 166 mHz, 32megs FPM, Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM video
card, Windoze 95.

After loading UNIVBE I can run all tracks smoothly (except Monaco) at 17
fps with ALL graphics details on.

Unfortunately the sky gives me motion sickness :o~ Turning it off I can run
at 22 fps.

At Monaco I can run 16 fps smoothly with all graphics except sky.

Don't know why I get such a big improvement in frame rates,  I assume GP2
must check to see if VESA2.0 is available and uses it if it is ???  Or
maybe the UNIVBE driver hooks the VESA 1.x modes and implements them faster
than the video BIOS.

PS GP2 is a GREAT game.  You've just got to take the time to learn to
drive. 200 hrs was all it took me ;)

I have ATI Mach64 with 3D accleration (2 Mb) on my Aptiva P-133.  Can
I use UniVBE?  If so, where do I get it?

Thanks!

Andrew.

UNIVBE is now called "Display Doctor" by SciTech.
Their website is www.scitechsoft.com

UNIVBE (shareware) has been shipped with several games - so you might
already have it on a game CD.

Sorry, dunno if the Mach64 can use it.

I would check ATI's web site and grab their latest VESA driver for your
card.  http://www.atitech.ca/

I dont know about you other guys but to me 17fps isnt smooth, actually 22fps
isnt smooth either.
I need 25,6< to feel satisfied with the framerate. Anything lower is choppy to
me.

Suppose it all depends on what you define as smooth.  IMHO, anything
over 17 fps is smooth and if you're still using VGA on a P200,
there's something drastically wrong with either your system or your
eyes,  or even both.   Have you turned the sky off ??  Better still,
what video card is in your machine.  It cant be that good.  Try a
Matrox Millenium and you should see an improvement.

That's very...unfortunate for you. Personally, I'm lucky enough to interprete
18-19fps as smooth enough.

I guess everyone is different...
