I've just discovered Your post. I was experimenting quite a few yesterday
night with the final German version of GP2 (in the US ;-), and what I've
found out pretty much underlines what You've found, plus I've managed to
generalize this fact.
So, it seems like that the ultimate "trick" to get smooth graphics is to
always set the adjustable (target) frame rate to something at least 2.0 lower
than the projected (calculated/non-adjustable) frame-rate.
Before I had the usual "slowdown" problem when there was too much smoke or
a crash, but now it's gone. Not only that, but now I am able to turn on a
lot more textures and object detail than before in SVGA! Here are my current
settings:
Target fps: 15.0 (seems low, but it's very much playable on most tracks!)
Calculated fps: 17.0
Processor occupancy at Hockenheim is 100-110% (but still horribly high in
Monaco). The car is now more responsive and graphics appear to be smoother.
All this just because I lowered the target (adjustable) fps!
Hope it helps! (Once you get your GP2, he-he! :)
