upgrading cpu for better GPL performance?

by Slo2bu » Fri, 05 Oct 2001 23:40:48

Hello,

I was just wondering if a cpu upgrade would do me any good.   Presently, I

MX400 (32meg w/ tv out), using an Abit BX2 rev.2 motherboard.  I don't plan
on spending much, maybe $100, but I'd like to get a boost in performance,
especially in GPL.  My plan is to try to find a 533-600 FCPGA Celeron,
since these seem to easily overclock onto the 100mhz bus, or to just buy
one of the newer 100mhz celerons (800 and up) if prices go down.

Does anyone have a similar system to what I want to upgrade to or know if
this would be a useful upgrade?

Thanks in advance,
Pascal

Is your current Celeron FCPGA or is it PPGA?  I think all of the Celerons
under 533 are PPGA, which means you'd probably have to buy a new motherboard
in order to use a FCPGA processor.  That might still only cost you around
$100 though.

I have a similar system, except for having a BH6 motherboard.  I got a
useful performance improvement by going to a 566 Celeron on a slot 1
to socket 370  adaptor and running it at 850.

Hope that helps,
Peter Holt

Celeron 300 doesn't exist in FCPGA form, mine happens to be the PPGA.  My
motherboard does however support FCPGA.  The reason I want FCPGA is that i
was checking overclockers.com and the 533 PPGA didn't seem at all as
overclockable as the FCPGA version.  From 533 to 633 (all FCPGA), there
seems to be a high success rate of overclocking.

Cool!
Then I would go for it!  The motherboard I had when I had a celeron only
supported PPGA, so I ended up getting an entire new system.

Many months ago, I upgraded from the Celeron 300a (running at 450) to a Celeron
566 (running at 850).  I don't recall the specs on configuration but I wound up
having to use the Abit Slotket, which worked just fine.  I'm using an Abit BH6
mobo.  This chip was pretty easy to overclock, and it's _definitely_ worthwhile
with GPL.

BTW, I got all the help I needed regarding the upgrade and overclocking at
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.abit and alt.comp.hardware.overclocking

Good Luck.

I have a Celeron 600 running at 999 (the next notch up required too high
a voltage increase); been rock solid stable for around 8 months now.
The primary trick is to get the right S-spec, the rest of it you
undoubtedly already know since you are already overclocked.  I haven't
kept track of what the hot setup is lately, but www.overclockers.com and
alt.comp.hardware.overclocking seemed to be the best sources for info on
which chips and rev levels to get.

The other side of the coin of course is that a new CPU and motherboard
doesn't really cost all that much if you look around.  A buddy of mine
just bought a 1.4 ghz Athlon recently, and I thought he said he paid
less than $100 for it.

If you can still find it, the celeron 566 overclocks to 850 very well, and
will run gpl beatifully for you.
You'll need to get a slotket for it, the AbitIII slotket works very well. I
have been running this combo on a Abit BH6 motherboard for some time now
without a glitch.
I personally am looking at dropping in a P3 1gig slot one it mine to
hopefully get a few more months out of this BH6 board.

Don, I just put an OS in a new 1 gig notebook with 256 pc100. FWIW, not much
difference

The reason that the 533 doesn't overclock is because it is based on
the P2 core. The 566 and higher celerons are based on the coppermine
core and thus are very overclockable.

Good luck trying to get one though, they've been out of production for
a long time. Maybe second hand?

Was worth the upgrade. If you cannot test the CPU at 100 MHz before buying,
better go for a C800.

BTW: Have a V3 2000
