Upgrade what for better performance in NASCAR?

by la.. » Sat, 16 Mar 1996 04:00:00

Does anyone have any knowledge on what would improve framerates,
graphics drawing ect... in speed intense games such as Nascar, Indy,
ect... as far as upgrading my system?

I have an AT&T Globalyst 375TPC with 100mhz Pentium
16kb internal cache (slot available to add ext. cache)
S3 - Trio64 VGA with 1MB of VDRA memory (upgradeable to 2meg)
16meg of ram (upgradable to 192)
1.6 gig HD and 4X CD.
Telemetry 32 w/telephone sound/modem 14.4 card

Any help on what type (s) of upgrades would directly benefit my system
in games performance would be greatly appreciated!
I am becoming a HUGE nascar fan but seem to be experiencing alot of
lag in the graphics/screen drawing is jumpy at times in different
tracks and I have to turn off the grass and road textures to even make
it playable but still some lag occurs. I have read some of the tips in
the manual and web pages and they just seem to refer to turning these
options off but I would really like to speed up/"tweak" my system to
handle these better.

P.S./ Anyone else have an AT&T computer with these specs. ?

Thanks...

My experience is that the biggest factor in frame rate is the graphics
card. (I'd like to hear what others think)

I had a chance to run NASCAR on two different machines with the same
graphics card. Both had an ATI Mach 64.

The machines were a 486/66 with a Vesa local bus and a Pentium 60
with a PCI bus. The 486 was only about 10% slower on frame rate (this
was with most of the texture maps turned off on both).

On the other hand last year at the Games Developer Conference I saw
NASCAR running at 60 frames a second with all the graphics on,
running on a Pentium (don't know the speed of the machine). That was
with some next generation display chip set. Sure was cool.

Also, at that show, a manufacturer was showing a joystick with
servo motors built in to provide force feedback, running NASCAR. The demo
unit was a coin-op quality unit in a desktop box. It was great! When
you went into a drift you could feel it and when you hit the wall, you
could REALLY feel it. It also worked on Doom so that you had recoil when
you fired a weapon. The manufacturer claimed then that he would be shipping
by Spring '96 for a price point of about $129 street price. My reaction
was "yeah right" and I haven't heard anything since. Too bad. He said they
were also going to do a steering wheel version. My feeling was that
it was so cool that it would be worth it at three times the price.

If I was you, I'd upgrade my video card. This is what controls the
graphics. Look at a Matrox Millineum.

I would add some external cache first. It is cheaper, provides more per-
formance, and it doesn't involve selling an old card.

I have a 486DX/120 with an ATI Mach 64 1Mb video card.  I have ALL
graphics turned on without any flickers.  The system runs NASCAR
terrifically!  It has 256K Cache, 16Mb RAM (60ns), Western Digital
1.2GB drive.  The motherboard is a Magitronics.  So far it outperforms
most of our P75's and P90's at work.  Most of the performance
degredation of a system is slow SIMMS, or miss-setup BIOS settings.

You Say ...

1) GET EXTERNAL CACHE (256K) and make sure it is enabled in the BIOS.
2) GET Matrox Millenium Video Card (2MB standard will be fine)
3) Rock and Roll......

In my experience the best DOS *** card for the money is the Hercules
Stingray Pro.  $139 for the 1 MB card.  You only needed 1 MB for SVGA in
NASCAR.  I have a Millenium (4 MB) in a P133 and a Herc (1 MB) in a DX4-100.
The difference in NASCAR (hi-res) is that to get the same smoothness (realllll
smooth) I only have to turn the grandstand to auto on the 486.  Just my
experience.

I beleive the person responding was refering to my 16k internal cache
which I just ordered and external 256k cache. Will this be different
than actual onboard ram as far as speeding up apps, nascar, windows95,
ect... I was aware that nascar only uses up to 8meg of ram for actual
gameplay and beyond that, they way I understand it, is just for more
length in replay.
