GPL: Faster CPU=better laptimes?

by Martin Granber » Thu, 05 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

This might be old news, but I couldn't find anything about it so here I
go...

Yesterday I upgraded my CPU from a P2-266 running at 300 to a Celeron
466 running at 525.

Immediately my best laptimes were 0,5 seconds better than my fastest
ever before. And this is after a 5-week break from GPL. Normally it
takes me a couple of hours to get up to speed after such a long break.
I should also add that I don't think these new fastest laps were pretty
good, many small mistakes etc.

I remember when going from a P133 to P2-266 my laptimes in POD were
much better and this could only be because of the hardware upgrade.

FPS is much the same as before (only with more detail and higher
resolution). Used the same GPL version too (1.0).

So I'm beginning to wonder if CPU-speed is a factor here too. Or did I
rest myself into form? :)

Anyone noticed this before?

/Martin

Martin, when I went from a P1-233 to a C300A at 464 I also was able to
improve lap times with GPL 1.0, with better detail and resolution too.
In my opinion, though, what seems to make the difference is the system
response to control inputs being smoother through faster processing.  I
had noted this before when upgrading from the old 486-66 to overdrive
chip to P90 to P133 to P233, running various sims like GP2, N2, etc.

With a better framarate every simulation is more realistic = easier.

I disagree. More realistic = more difficult.
Ever driven with a 300 HP (or more) car. Than you know what I mean.

Terry is right about the control inputs. The more communication between your
hands and the wheels the better you drive.
Ever driven in a touring car (no matter how much HP)? Than you know what I
mean.

Sorry!
I mean:  more "FLOWING" = less difficult.
