GPL Start up Oddity

When GPL starts, it seems to "poll" my ISDN adapter.  If I'm online,
great, it starts up right away.

If I'm offline, however, it takes about 40 seconds to get past the
splash screen.  I can see the lights on my ISDN adapter flashing very
briefly, 6 times for each of 3 cycles.

I don't know if this happens to modem owners.  Anybody know a
workaround?  It's no showstopper..just an annoyance.
