by someon » Mon, 23 Jun 2003 09:29:17

(duck)  Okay okay I'm sure this question has been asked a lot.  But
what is the best sim right now in the following categories (on any
platform).  I highlight the word SIM.

Stock car
Rally
Formula Racing (f1, cart, etc)

Thanks

That's like asking a thousand people to name the best book or best movie or
best music or best washing machine or best car or best...........

Anyway, in answer to your question:-

NASCAR 2003
Colin McRae version whatever is the latest.
Grand Prix Legends.

CMR3 is not a realistic rally sim.

He asked what was the best, not was the most realistic.
Big difference when it comes to entertainment.

He did say "sim" though Bruce, not game.  To me and I think many others,  that automatically implies
realism as well.  CMR is really arcadey, so it gets almost no points on realism.

But isn't asking what the best "Simulation" the exact same as asking what is
the most realistic? If we are going by eye-candy, then I'd get GPL out of
there.. it looks a little dated by now.

Well - the term "best" is subjective. In other words, it is defined by
opinions and, as we are well aware, everyone has differing opinions.
Therefore, in my opinion, "best" in this context relates to overall
enjoyment and the "eye-candy" (as you refer to it) is only part of the
recipe.
I just happen to like the three games I mentioned..........i.e., it's my
subjective opinion.

Nascar Racing 2003 Season - Papyrus/Sierra (PC)

Rally Trophy - BugBear/JoWood (PC)

For online multiplayer capability one would still have to give it to:

Grand Prix Legends - Papyrus/Sierra (PC)

But if that's not really important to you:

F1 2002 - ISI/EA Sports (PC) is the better game (though the GTR2002 mod
showcases it's physics better), but I'd wait for the upcoming F1 Challenge
99-02 (+mods) in that case (possibly better multiplayer).

Dark Horse:

Netkar - Stefano Casillo (PC)

(can't find official site??)

Also worth sampling is:

Live for Speed - Scawen Roberts/Eric Bailey/Victor van Vlaardingen (PC)

The original person said "I highlight the word SIM".  That excludes such
arcade games like CMR3, whatever fun they may be.
