BEST SIM = HARDEST SIM???

I don't think a sim has to be hard to be good.  I've found the TOCA 2 demo
VERY playable yet a good challenge. I've played GPL and I think
it's...well...over the top.  Great game and all that, but it's just TOO
difficult. I got over frustrated and un-installed. The TOCA 2 demo
though...keeps me going and going.  I still think GP2 holds it's own fairly
well for all round racing,

By what standards do you use?  If you look at it as a "Game", then SCGT is
tops.  However, Looking at it as a racing sim.. Well, I can't do that because
I'm among those that can't put this in that category.

Again,  The SCGT "GAME" is worth the money. Just not worth a dime for a
racing sim.

My $0.02 worth,

BEST SIM = HARDEST SIM???

Well said, it's not worth a dime for a racing sim for now hopefully.
But true, it's still very much worth purchasing.  I'm dying to see the
other tracks.  Especially Sebring Int'l so I can compare it to my real
life experience at that track.

Well, I'm one of the few that can't put GPL in the sim category either,
because its still just a game.

Nonetheless the point is very much valid.  The BEST sim doesn't have to be
the HAREST sim (using that sim term very loosely).

Difficulty has nothing to do with realism. Who can't drive a car?

Hmmm, so your sayin you could hop into a 1999 Reynard Cart Champ car and
go like hell?  HAHAHA, I race cars now and have raced F125 carts to
FF2000 and you are totally wrong. Sure you could drive a Panoz around
Road Atlanta, but to do it quickly, is an art. So dont tell us its just
driving a car. Get out and try racing then rethink your statement.

I think it depends on your definition of 'simulation' and 'good'.  It seems
to me the if something is difficult to do IRL then a simulation of that
activity should be difficult also, no?  Otherwise it wouldn't be a
'simulation', would it?

Now I don't know about you but I suspect I would have extreme difficulty
driving a '67 F1  car at anywhere near its limits.  Have you noticed how
easy GPL is if you never go over 75 or 80 MPH?  Or only use about half
throttle?

I can't drive a car

although I can ride a motorbike :)

On the same subject - what are anybodys views on the latest N64 F1 game?

If hard = realistic then for sure. If it legitimatly says
"Simulation" on the box then you know what your in for.

I remember how humbling GPL was when I first began with it. After
being a multiple ICR2 Champion and World record holder at a few tracks I
never expected to take that sort of a beating to be honest :) But I now
feel almost as comfortable at the wheel GPL as I ever did with ICR2.

I also remember being disappointed when it was revealed that GPL would
not ship with full use of the GP2 and GP3 cars in championship and
online modes because it was obvious that many newbies and casuals would
be detered by the difficulty.

It is for this very reason that I recommend Viper Racing to anyone who
asks me for the best sim to get started with.

Good physics, fairly realistic, great graphics, and it can be is easy or
as hard to drive as you want it to be.

The only unknown is future development.  The last I heard, they didn't
have much interest in upgrades, new tracks, cars, etc..

Which is a crime, IMHO.

BEST SIM = HARDEST SIM???

by Tadej Krev » Wed, 24 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I was quite good at GP2 and F1RS (hell, I still have some world records) but GPL
was a shock.
It took me few hours to complete a racing lap around Glen GPL demo. Phew !
When I did 5 full laps without crashing or spinning out of the track, I felt like
celebrating :o)

And when I could finally lap around Glen in 1:10's I felt as I was the best ;o))

On the other hand, when F1RS came out, I could easily jump from GP2 to F1RS. GPL
was a huuuuuuge
step upward for me.
