Best F1 sim? Best Ralley sim? Best Wheel Under $100?

by <gfol.. » Sun, 17 Jun 2001 12:45:03

I was a PC car racing nut but been out of the loop for a while.  I went and
did something stupid...got married and what do you know it's been a few 2
years+ without much ***.  Anyway who is making the best Ralley sim?  What
about F1?  Is Act Labs still making a nice wheel?  How much?  Any
suggestions greatly appreciated.  Got the new Nas 4 and love it but my Mad
Catz wheel throttle is messed up.  I have to move the gas pedal from side to
side to get full use and then its a ***shoot...not much fun!  I don't
think I need a Force Feedback wheel never used one and feel it may tax my PC
so a non-FFB wheel would probably be fine unless you guys think otherwise.

Thanks,
Gary

If you mean Rally, it's a toss up between the current contenders:
Rally Masters, Colin McRae Rally 2.0, and Rally Championships.

Rally Masters have very SHORT tracks, but it "feels" more like rallying
with the slides around corners and wide open tracks. It also has a LOT
of super-special head-to-head stages. On the other hand, it has very
little traditional rallying (only 1/4th).

Rally Championships has the best tracks, but most of the courses are
VERY tight and some are extremely long (26 miles!) The driving model
seems to be very unforgiving and some claim, unrealistic. Powerslides
are nearly impossible. It has plenty of cars though, from tiny A5's all
the
way up to 4WD A8's.

Colin McRae 2.0 is somewhere between the two. The stages are short
but there's plenty of variety, while driving model is improved from the
previous version.

For F1, buy F1 CS 2000 if you have a CPU > 600 MHz and a new gfx card
(except GF MX series) you'll be very happy. People with less power seem to
hate the game and bash it without admitting that they have an out-of-date
computer. The cars may feel heavy, but there's a patch to make the cars
agile (All Chassis Patch). And the physics simulation and AI are great.

As for controller,  I'd say MS SideWinder FF Wheel or MS SideWinder
Precision Wheel, depending on your budget. Act Labs can be better, so listen
to someone who has one, but the new Logitech Wingman FF simply is a
headache, it has sooo many problems, braking, deadzone, etc.

Powerslides are not impossible at all. You just need the right physics
tweaks. On those tight tracks in the UK I doubt one would be doing
powerslides anyway. Those rally games where every corner is a
powerslide are BS arcade games. I watched some rally racing on TV the
other day and they certainly don't powerslide through every corner.
Mobil1 Rally Championship looks the closest to the real thing to me.

I'd say go with F1RC or GP3.
I have F1CS (also have F1 2000) and have tried it on Athlon 750 with Radeon
64DDR, Celeron 950 with Voodoo 4, it doesn't play well on either. Very poor
graphics optimisation in the game IMO and the cars definitely feel way to
heavy.

I use MSFF and MSPP wheels, both are pretty good.

Just get GPL and a good force feedback wheel.  You don't need other
sims!
