I've been trying to think of a way to make a contibution to the Sim
Racing community and I think I have a good idea. I'd like to put
together a web site that follows the evolution of the racing sims we
know and love. A place to learn about the past and the the future, and
have a historical record laid out. To accomplish this, I would
definitely need help and input from many of you who read this group and
are a part of this community. What do you all think? Has this been done
already? Are you willing to contribute? Please respond here or e-mail me
if you have any thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Matt Howell

I think it's a great idea,
A site with Sim Racing history sounds great. You could include little
thumbnails of each game, showing the progression through the years.
I can remember vividly when Pole Position came out in the arcades, it
changed everything. It was one of the first to have that lower angle
viewpoint. My dad even played it, and he's a Hot Rod guy, and even
though it was pretty 'arcadish' he loved it.
I don't know what I could do to help you on this project, I'm no
historian, but go for it!
Actually, I'm an artist, so maybe I could help in one way or another.
There are a lot of really big name sim racers on this ng, I'm sure you
could find many great resources here.

Best of luck,

Raevyn

Yeah, of course, before Pole Position, the only games with racing cars
in were these overhead viewed games where F1 cars went around a maze (I
think) collecting triangular flags and they spun and crashed if you hit
some oil. Really, Revs was a milestone in simracing, because without it
we would not have simracing today (ie. no ICR2, no GP2 etc), which was
made by Geoff Crammond in the days when programmers worked more or less
solo.

Don't forget Night Driver.  That was one of, if not the first 1st person
perspective driving games I can recall.

Yeah, the 1st person view in Night Driver was definitely an influence on
the Hard Drivin' / Race Drivin' development team at Atari.

HD / RD added a physics model and force feedback based on the tire forces.

Does anyone remember "Enduro Racer" on the Atari Games console? Or am I too old
:-) I *loved* the great colors in that game!! (at least 16 of them)

Or what about Indy500 on the Atari console. Those ice-races were really a test
of skill. No matter what they say, it was fun in those days.

GO FOR IT!

Oh man, John,
Do I ever! That Atari Enduro game, if it's the same that I remember...
had this special motorcycle controller, handles and throttle and all.
You would race on this side scroller and take these huge jumps. (hope
this is the same game..) like Evil Kenevil !  I must've played that
game every day that summer. It's one of those memories that just hit
me out of nowhere..
And oh yes.. I do remember the icy track on the Indy500 game.

Wow

Raevyn

ps: There was an ancient Car Wars game, where you drove around in a
maze and shot at each other..
I remember about a million years ago in the arcades there was this
non-video game, it was actually two pieces of plastic,, it was a cop
chasing a robber (two cars) and the drivers were*** out the
windows with guns! The point was to aim it right and take down the
robber (or vice versa..).
This is a dim memory, it came out around the same time the console
Death Race 2000 game came out. Another classic!

whew, and I'm only 29

Yeah, there were two games called Enduro Racer... One was on arcade
where you sat on a full size dirtbike and the view was from behind the
bike. The other was on the home machines, where it was a bit like
Paperboy but faster and on dirt :)

PS. Does anyone remember the first ever motorbike arcade game where you sat on
the bike? It was really popular, and ***arcades still have it.

Looks like it isn't. I went to the ba***t today and dug up that lovely console
and some cartridges. The game I meant is "Enduro", by Activision (they made the
best stuff at the time).

I also bumped into "Decathlon".. This is a bit off topic, but I can say that
THAT was the game (On my C64)I spent most time on before Amiga/F1GP! If they
would release a game like that with spiced-up graphics, I wouldn't doubt a
moment to buy it.

Maybe I'm not THAT old  :-)
