I want to replace my trusty old Microprose Grand Prix sim for a Win 95/98
sim - what's best - any ideas?

Well if you're in the UK (and your trusty old Sim is GP1) then buy GP2 -
it's just come out on budget, and should tide you over 'till GP3 next year.

Well, GP2 is still a DOS sim, but I also would highly recommend
it for an F1GP player.  If you can find it (licensing issues
expired, I hear).

Windows, I guess GPL (Grand Prix Legends -- Sierra/Papyrus) or
MGPRS (Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulation -- Ubisoft) would be
the front runners... GPL being a 1967 sim (no wings, no slicks),
MGPRS being a current day version.

I'll not spoil the broth by saying which one I prefer, but I sure
wish it had wings and slicks <g>.

GPL takes a lot of hardware horsepower (P-II and 3dfx or
Rendition video card highly recommended).

Rgds,
Mark R.

While I agree if you liked GP1 you will love GP2 (provided your
hardware is up to the job?) I think it is generally accepted now that
F1RS is the overall *best* F1 sim (modern).

It has most of the features of GP2, (cannot save hotlap) and a few
more features, (ghostlaps, weather, multiplayer via lan/internet, etc)
and better (3Dfx) graphics. There are also various editors to tweak
the game to your liking.

BTW, I'm a big F1RS & GP2 fan, and although I actually recommend F1RS
as the best *overall* modern F1 sim, I think GP2 has a *slightly*
better driving model. So if *pure driving* is your thing, get GP2, if
you want the best looker and the extra features, get F1RS.

If you want the *best* F1 sim (ever) or any other sim come to that?
then there is no question, GPL is the one to get, awesome, simply
awesome.

8-)

I have both GP2 and GPL.  If you can get a hold of GP2, get it while you
can; its a classic.  If your hardware can support it (3dfx card and lots of
CPU horse power) get GPL.

After all, get both

He should get MGPRS2, which is the follow up to F1RS.

I really don't understand why you run it in VGA on such a system. You
could easily run it in SVGA on 25 fps with only a few details turned off
like sky.
On my P120 I run it in SVGA with all but fences off and objects low at
21 fps (Monaco: + objects off at 18).

I looked at the Demo of MGPRS - thought it was horrid! Nice graphics, poor
sound and very much an arcade game to GP2's sim - not for me at all! I'll
hang on for GP3 I think.....

The graphics are nice, the sound is poor, but I think you sell it short
calling it an arcade game compared to GP2.  I've just been fiddling with both
(all aids turned off) and find them pretty similar.  The RS2 demo might have
been stuck in the basic driving model?

Same here. You've gotta invest some time with the sim before you
start to appreciate it. You have to be very exact round the corners,
not giving too much steering angle and you'll get faster all the time.
Although I used to be a die-hard gp2 racer I'm now favouring RS2, and
even in amateur level the AI still beats me regularly in career mode
(if you feel like it check my "hooversoft race reports" posted in this
forum).

I'm quite sad rs2 isn't discussed as thoroughly as it deserves here, but
I guess that most of us are busy racing around the Nuerburgring and will
continue to be so for years to come. ;-)

Uwe

PS: Now if only we'd see a Linux port of those sims.... happiness!

I also am a huge fan of RS2 and have to agree with you, not enough
discussion about the game. But with the Game Service, we are all too busy
racing each other around the world.

I've been trying out RS2 for about 3 weeks now, and I have to agree that it's
one of the top 2 sims right now. I've not tried GPL's but judging by the
traffic and the people talking about it, it seems to be right alongside.

The thing about RS2 that catches you at first are the bright colours. These
can seem arcade like at first, but run GP2 right after and you soon see how
dark IT is. The racing seems quite good - I'm in an off line Touring Car
League right now so I haven't had much time to get into it - but the options
seem to excellent. Career/Scenario/Time Attack. It should last for a long
while.
