OT: Buying a Radeon 9800XT today. Need nVidia Driver 'Scrubber'

by Larr » Sun, 07 Dec 2003 05:05:45

Well, I never thought I'd pay close to $500 for a video card, but I'm buying
myself a nice christmas present this year.

I've looked them all over, and I decided the ATI Radeon 9800 XT is what I
will get.

There are three basic reasons:

1.  I want a 256MB card.  I think it's time.
2.  nVidia's current offerings do NOT impress me one bit.
3.  I considered the 9800 Pro, which in it's 128MB configuration is much
cheaper at $299 or so, but I want 256MB of RAM this time and the 256MB
versions of the 9800 pro are over $400.  Might as well just go for the XT !

So, I need a utility that will COMPLETELY scrub the nVidia drivers from my
system.  I know there was once one that ran only under Win9x, but what about
Windows XP ?

Thanks :)

Great little utility there...I 'thought' I'd done a pretty complete
cleaning out of nvidia driver files...but this jobbie found a few more...

I found Detonator R.I.P which seems to have done the job.

One oddity.  It requires the Microsoft .Net framework to be installed.  I
sure hope that doesn't catch on as a requirement!

Reinstall windows. it's NEVER a bad idea - especially when doing a move like
that.

If you're prepared to spend $400+ on a graphics card, then you should be
prepared to spend an hour reinstalling windows to set it up properly.

Trust me.  It's not an hour :)  More like 2 days for me.

All is ok.  The sc*** I used worked fine.

Jeez larry Im suprised you ever upgraded your 8088 based dos 3.1 box.

New technology occasionlly works as advertised.  I dont have the details
on the don net framework but you WILL use it.  Maybe not today or
tommorow but eventually.  ALl new MS products are based on this
technology so be prepared.

Lots of newly developed software will require .Net framework.  Its nothing
more than the underline runtime system for new MS developed software, not
sure why people have such issue with it.  I think most think its some sort
of internet based link to MS.  Its no different than the runtime files other
programs installed in the past, and if anything it easies installs as once
the framework is in place, new apps are much easier to be installed.  So its
not an oddity at all, any software developed with Visual Studio is going to
require the framework for it to run.

My problem is that programmers have forgotten how to be programmers, and
WRITE CODE!

Now they need a 'framework' that adds 25-50MB overhead to a program that
does nothing more that write "Hello World" on the screen.

But that's just me :)  Maybe it's just part of life with a GUI.  At least
the _Windows_ GUI.

And remember, every time something is written with a platform-specific
framework, that's one more stab in the back of cross-platform.  But I'm sure
that NEVER crossed Microsoft's mind :)

You pretty much mentioned what I don't like about it:

1.  RUNTIME Files.
2.  PLATFORM specific.

Most applications are that way.  Java style apps seem to be all but dead
thanks to Sun.

If people are targeting Windows then what is the issue?  Almost all apps
today are platform specific and have been for the last decade or more for
the majority.  This is far fro ma new concept.

Has nothing to do with not knowing how to code and more to do with using the
tools at hand.  The framework handles much of the low level code that would
take months to recreate.  Developers can focus on solving business/ end user
needs as opposed to writing low level code to handle every hardware event.

Well, there was once a time when Code Portabilty was important.  I guess
that's not the case any more...
