ALMS Mod for F1-2001

Guys...

I've just discovered how to do high-res***pits for these cars....(using an
old GPL technique) without any major hit to the FPS (3 FPS hit on my
system).  But.....need some in-car***pit pictures of the ALMS cars
(especially the Chevy Corvette Team's "yellow" vettes....like Big E and
Little E drove last year at the Rolex-24).  Any help with a web location for
these would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom what do you think of the physics in this mod?  The tires feel way
too sticky to me, but I have no real world racing experience, I can only
compare it to other sims.  I did note that they are using a higher
friction coefficient for the tires than either F1 2001 or the FIA GT
mod, but there is some debate about whether those lower values are
correct or not.  What do you think?

The guys who made the mod are great guys, but I have spent hours discussing
grip values with them and well when they were doing some Sports Car GT stuff
I felt the grip was too high compared to what a real car is.  The crew there
does do very good work tho.

Try racing the AI. Even with the higher levels of grip, they did a good job
with the AI.Its really alot of fun racing, you still have to get the car on
the edge to keep up.

Didn't RACER magazine do a profile on the Vette sometime in the last year
for one of their "In Focus" articles?

My June 2001 issue has the Street-Track Showdown between the Z06 and the
C5-R( yellow Goodwrench Service #3). Page 60 has a sweet cutaway and page 62
has a pretty good picture of the dash. The picture is through the drivers
window and a wee bit of the pic is cropped by the mag to the left of the
start button to the "trans" light.

Road and Track and they did a great job on the article about both Vettes.

The ALMS Mod for F1-2001 completely whips ass into a frothy.... well
anyways, Its the first time in a while that I take some laps in the morning
before work .lol. I think if the grip levels werent as high as they are
there would be some frustrating spots on some tracks. :)

I'm not trying to be sarcastic....but how the hell do I get access to back
issues of racing magazines over the net?  <I haven't got a clue.>

Haq....

I agree with your assessment that the cars are too "grippy!"  However, the
"race car" driver in me just giggles all over the place driving this
mod....since I, and my entire race team......spends every waking hour
practically, trying to figure out a setup that will be that "hooked up!"
You know?  So as a driver.....its just a blast to drive these cars.
However, that's not totally realistic since you can't get your real race car
that "hooked up"....but about one race per life time!

I have been running the corvettes almost exclusively....about 4 to 5 hours
track time at Australia.  I only have a total of an hour or so in all the
other cars combined.....a situation I hope to rectify over this weekend, if
possible.  However, I did find that lowering the terrain.ini "dry" setting
to .90 helped get the vette sliding better through the high-speed
turns....but only when really pushing the car at 9/10ths or
higher......which is not very realistic either.  I want to work on this a
bit more.....but won't have the time until Sunday.  My guess is that this
"terrain.ini" setting only modifies the tire friction coefficient....so that
is the better place to work on the tire grip.....but is that the only place?

All in all....this "mod" if you can call it that...its more like a
completely new sim......is just awesome!

Regards,

Tom

I think I have that racer magazine lying around somewhere. If you
don't get someone to scan it until next weekend, drop me a mail and
I'll do it after I get back next saturday.

ALMS Mod for F1-2001

Tom,

Look in the ALMS2001GTSeason\Vehicles folder for files that have the
extension ".tbc".  These are the tire files.  They have a section for
each compound (soft, hard, etc.) and separate subsections for front and
rear tires.  Within each subsection are values for the dry and wet
lateral and longitudinal friction coefficients.  You can see these
values are rather high.  Also they have raised the load sensitivity of
the tire quite a bit.  I think ISI's use of load sensitivity here is the
inverse of the normal definition, so they have actually decreased the
load sensitivity of the tire according to the normal definition.  This
would mean less degradation of the friction coefficient due to increased
load.  Not sure if you would want to fool around with that also, but I
just wanted to point out that this is another thing they changed
relative to F1 2001 and the FIA mod.

If you come up with anything good please post it.

Regards,
Hal

I would think one of two ways....
A. the magazine company has archives available for viewing..
b.  a binaries newsgroup, probably with scan in the name has uploaded the
pages of magazines from all over...if your lucky...you might find something
there...

Thanks, Dave....I really had no clue how to go about finding pics out of old
magazines.  My experience has been that racing mags only save the "text"
portions of their archive mags.
