GPL framerates Rendition & Voodoo2

Here are some numbers for those trying to determine what card to buy for
GPL. I have an PII300 with an ASUS P2B and 128meg Ram. Nothing is over
clocked here. (YET)

All of the tests were performed with everything (graphics) on and a 19
car field. The pits numbers were performed with a new race selected
every time as to not get conflicting numbers as AI drivers would exit
out to practice. Their were three tests performed under each card
varying from 0% detail bias, 50% detail bias and then 100% detail bias.

Rendition:
Hercules Thriller AGP 8 meg
0 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 24 to 25
Sitting on the line - FPS = 35 to 36

50% Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 22 to 23
Sitting on the line - FPS = 19 to 20

100 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 15 to 16
Sitting on the line - FPS = 14

3DFX
STB BlackMagic Voodoo2 12meg
0 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 23 to 24
Sitting on the line - FPS = 23 to 24

50 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 19 to 20
Sitting on the line - FPS = 16

100 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 11 to 12
Sitting on the line - FPS = 11 to 12

The numbers indicate that the Rendition card  performs a little better
with FPS outscoring in every situation. In my opinion the Thriller looks
a little prettier as well. The 3DFX card performs well and looks a
little smoother, but is a little washed out looking. The sim is very
playable with either. If you are a Sierra sim racing fan get a Thriller
8meg for your 2D 3D combo. If you like all the other games out there as
well get a Voodoo2 for your second card. The Voodoo2 really shines with
QuakeII, Unreal, Freespace etc....

Thanks

I hereby proclaim this to be the "sweeny test" which will cause
endless upgrades to improve framerates. What resolution were you
running ? Does everything on include mirrors ?  What was the test
track ?  One last question . Do you like the rendition "track texture"
?

I used 800*600 for the test at Monza. Yes everything means mirrors as well.
The Rendition track texture, now that you mention it is a bit smoother
looking with the Voodoo2. Their are tradeoffs between the cards, the
Rendition being a little better performer overall. I like the looks of the
Rendition better but its a real personal taste call here. Sorry dafney if I
have caused everyone to run to Compusa and spend a bunch of money! But that's
what I work 09:00 to 5:00 for, TOY's. More, More More! You know the old
saying, he or she with the most toys!!

Sorry, I meant to say the track texture is a little smoother with the Voodoo2,
not
(The Rendition track texture, now that you mention it is a bit smoother looking
with the Voodoo2. ) which does not make any sense.

By the way, I stopped everything on the desktop with the exception of explorer.
My processor was running at 98% at the time of the tests.

GPL framerates Rendition & Voodoo2

by jeff » Mon, 05 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Ok OK you got me.  I am ordering a new machine this week and have been
debating heavily whether or not to go with its installed default ATI Rage
Pro AGP or the Hercules 8mb AGP.  I think I am going with the Hercules.
Besides, after I get the machine, I can't see myself playing anything but
GPL....  at least for a while anyway!

Thanks, Rick,

J.

GPL framerates Rendition & Voodoo2

I have a BH6 and P II 300 O/C to 450.
I have a CL V2 12mb  At 600x800 I average
around 36 fps.I haven't tried it with v-sync
off yet.I also maintain 36 fps at  the next res which is like 960x720  I also
widened the screen as much as I could.I really don't like the letterbox effect
at all.I have everthing on
and maxed out.If at 450 I get 36 fps on average,I don't think you can go much
higher
with everthing maxed out.I haven't tried
tweaking it yet.Its extremely photorealistic at
higher resolutions.Too bad I can't use my TNT on it.
