Before I got a V3 3000 I ran a TNT (Creative) with 1 then 2 V2s (SLI) Never
had a problem with either configuration. With the PIII and even one V2 you
should get more than acceptable framerates - Do it !

    Cheers..

GPL 1.1 & TNT & Voodoo2 ?

Hi Max,

Just a newbie to GPL. You've basically got my setup. I bought a Dell
PIII-450 with the RIVA TNT about and month ago and THEN discovered GPL.
Since I use my PC for work, I was a little apprehensive about pulling the
video card and replacing it. So I bought the VooDoo2 1000 12MB card because
it was an add on. I can now run GPL with EVERYTHING on and still get 36 FPS.
It's great!

That's very interesting - I have a 16mb Voodoo Banshee, which is
supposed to be quite a bit faster than a single Voodoo-2 (someone on ras
confirmed this recently).

However, I can only get 36fps if I turn off most of the detail and run
against 2 AI cars at most.

Guess what - I have a P233!

Seems to prove conclusively that GPL is CPU-bound (probably floating
point, from what I've heard about the PIII).

Sadly my Dell can't be upgraded beyond 233 MHz, and in fact it's not
even my computer, so what am I complaining about?  ;-)

Interesting, at what resolution did you get 36 fps ? I have a Compaq with a
PIII 450 with a V2, but I have to turn some minor details off at 800x600 to
get a solid 36. Or maybe it is the 1.1 patch. But I do have a hunch that my
system is underperforming. Anyway, in a week or so I'm going to buy myself a
standard motherboard and a standard cabinet, and rebuild the whole thing so
I can get out of the Compaq curse. If a V2 is getting good fps, I have two
choises, buy a TNT2 or a G400, and keep the V2, or buy a V3 3000. Can anyone
help ?

Hi Olav,

I was getting a good solid 36 FPS at 800X600. I went up to 1024X768 and the
FPS went down into the high 20's or so. Didn't pay much attention though
because it started crashing and freezing up. I backed down to 800X600 again
but am still getting occasional crashes. I guess this is the price of all
this incompatible technology. There are so many variables and just as soon
as you see someone who has a setup that works or doesn't , someone else
claims just the opposite. It's hard to keep up. But oh is GPL ***ive!

GPL 1.1 & TNT & Voodoo2 ?

Get a tweakable motherboard, such as the Abit B(something)6, so you
can experiment with BIOS setting to get the best out of your other
hardware.

Since you already have a V2, I would keep this and get a TNT2 (or
G400). I own a V3 2000 (supposedly only one 7th slower than the 3000.
It has slower RAM and is clocked at a slightly lower speed.), which is
a nice enough card. But it's not a revelation even in comparison to my
old V1. It's better and faster than the V1, for sure, but not several
orders of magnitude as the hype about this card would led one to
believe. From what I read, the TNT2 seems to be the superior chip -
just not for GPL. If GPL is all you play, take the V3 for maximum
performance. If you also play other titles (D3D mode), a TNT2 *and* a
V2 seems to be a great combination.
