GPL: Voodoo2 and P450 FrameRate?

by Jeffrey Hunsberge » Wed, 07 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I am getting a new P2-450 with a Voodoo2 and was wondering what kind of
frame rate I am likely to get.  All cars? All detail? A lot of the
benchmarks I have seen involve SLI V2's but if I were to spend the $$ I
would probably buy a Thriller 2 instead of a second Voodoo2.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

J.

I have Celeron 300a(at 450 MHz) and Voodoo2 8MB. At the starting grid i get
around 15fps with everything at maximum. During a race usually 36 fps, but
it sometimes drop to around 20-25 fps in certain curves with a few AI cars
around.

I'm getting the same type of results with a P2 400 196Mb ram and 12 mb
voodoo2.

How do you think the 12mb Voodoo2 will work?  Also, do you think that the
P2-450 will outperform the Celeron?  I don't know much about Celeron
chips.

Thanks for your reply!

I have a PII-300 with a Creative Labs Voodoo 2 12 MB card.  128 MB PC100
RAM, yada yada yada.  Driving alone or in the middle of a race with a few
cars around and all graphics on I get a frame rate in the mid 30s.  At the
start of a race, with 19 cars and all graphics, I get a frame rate in the
mid 20s.

Jeff, go with the Hercules Thriller AGP 8meg Rendition card. If you can
wait, the Redline v3xxx will be out someday(month or two). I run a Herc
2d/3d Rend AGP card and MegaMonster setup(2 sli 3dfx cards) The Rendition
card works great with framerates maxed at 36 with everything on. I mean
everything too. Sound, graphics and 19 cars....
Get ready to be amazed.....Matt

GPL: Voodoo2 and P450 FrameRate?

Jeff,

I installed GPL last night and was getting between 26 and 32 fps on a
P2-450/128Meg ram with a single Monster Voodoo 2 w/ 12 meg.  All cars,
all detail 1024x768, sounds set to 12.  Only problem is that it locks up
within 3 to 5 minutes.

I have a friend with PII 400, 128Mb RAM and Vodoo2. He runs GPL at 1024x786
with all detail on and all 19 cars. He gets 30+ framerate at all times. By the
way he's got the 100mhz bus speed.... from what I hear that "will" make a huge
difference with the Vodoo2.
