gpl: rendition vs. voodoo2

by Brian Fo » Sat, 13 Feb 1999 04:00:00

I just purchased a stealth s220 ($32 with a $30 rebate) for my p200mmx to
get me by until my summer or fall upgrade to a 400+ processor.  I thought
for $2 it would have to be better than the worthless 4mb Hercules voodoo
rush board I've been using for the last year.  Mostly all I do is nascar2
and gpl, with the occasional nfs3.  I was also thinking about adding a
monster 3d II in a month or two, so I would already have a good 3d card once
I made the switch to the 400mhz.  My question is, since I don't know
anything about rendition, wouldn't a 12meg voodoo2 run gpl better than a
4meg rendition?  I know some people have said that rendition has clearer
picture quality and better coloring than 3dfx, but I haven't heard much
about the speed.  Also, how does the 2d of the stealth compare to the 2d of
the voodoo rush?  And finally, the stupidest question of the bunch, I
thought I read somewhere back when I got my herc stingray that I couldn't
add another 3d card to my computer because the voodoo rush wouldn't be
compatible?  Could someone be so kind to clear this up for me?  I don't plan
on keeping the s220 once I do upgrade the processor, so does anyone have any
suggestions for a new 2d/3d card?  Isn't a new rendition supposed to be
coming out some year :)? Thanks.

Actually Brian for your processor a 4meg hercules thriller will be up to10fps
faster than a 12 meg voodoo2. Thats because papy sims are written optimized for
the rendition video chipset which is in the hercules thriller cards. On a 300mhx
cpu it is a tossup unless you have an 8 meg thriller which will be better again.
At 400mhz cpu the load is carried by the cpu so at this point it is a tossup for
speed. FYI you can get a thriller 4 meg for $35.

The answer is maybe buy a Voodoo2.  Reason for not is that your current
processor won't make it work to its full extent and the rendition card will
give you better performance.  Also by the time frame you mentioned for a CPU
upgrade, there will be much better 3D and 2D/3D cards on the market.  The
only real reason to buy a Voodoo2 is to be able to play games such as GPL
that support proprietary 3DAPI, of which both Glide and Rendition are (yes,
D3D is also somewhat proprietary in the fact it only runs on Windows
machines).  I would not plan on buying a Voodoo2 as my main 3D card by the
time summer or fall rolls around.  As a legacy card, yes....in fact my 2
Voodoo2 SLI combo is waiting to become a legacy setup just for GPL and the
few EASports games that run better in Glide mode, when either the Permedia3
or the Savage4 finally come out.  I'd avoid the Voodoo3 when it comes out,
even though it will be faster than 2 Voodoo2s supposedly, it has a lot of
the drawbacks and limitations of the Voodoo2 architecture (256x256 textures,
16bit color, etc).

Brian,
I have an AMD K6 233, Stealth II S220, and CL 12 meg Voodoo2.  In GPL I get
anywhere from 8-15 fps more on the Stealth II than on the 12 meg Voodoo2.  And
others are right, the game does look noticably better in Rendition.  I get the
impression that GPL was written for Rendition then adapted for 3Dfx.  To me,
with both cards one can have the best of both worlds.  I love Papyrus sims, and
the Stealth II works fantastic.  But the Voodoo 2 is incredible in D3d and glide
apps (my favorites being flight sims).  I only wish I had gotten my StealthII
for $2 over a year ago (but at the time the $74 was a pretty good deal).

If you have reason to purchase the Voodoo2, which is a phenomenal card, you
might be interested to know that the new NASCAR 1999 Edition (basically an
updated N2)--has excellent 3Dfx support built in.  In fact, the graphics in 3Dfx
mode look tremendous, as anti-aliasing can be enabled.  I got it for $29.99 at
Wal-Mart--and it has a number of new tracks and key updates such as double-file
restarts.  Something to consider--it is rather cool to be able to choose either
one--it's like choosing chocolate or vanilla ice cream--I love 'em both.

Also, Viper Racing (Direct 3d) looks better on the Voodoo (none of the visible
drawing ahead you see on the Stealth II).  NFS3 is best on the 12 meg Voodoo2,
as it was written for that chipset (in particular, the 12 meg best allows you to
run with the visible***pit).

Thanks for the info, but my stealth just came and I'm off to tinker.  After
my stint with the stingray, I refuse to buy another hercules product anyway.

Now maybe I'll get more than 12fps from the***pit view......wooohooooo!

Not gonna happen man. Yes, Hercules admits they screwed up with the stingray,
and they still do not update their drivers often, however the Herc Thriller 3D
8mb card is the way to go.

Where there are all 20 cars on grid at start it plummets to about 8-10, but
normally
I get around 20 fps with all graphics on apart from a few bits in mirrors

Banshee 16mb........AMD k6 233 40 meg off ram.....
I dont get much of a replay as I only have 40mb of RAM i must get a 128
Dimm..

I think I am running 640 by something.....
