GPL freezes in the menu screens usually a few seconds after a mouse click.
There is a flickering ghost that is on the screen where the mouse was
clicked. Until the freeze, the real mouse is functional. One time I froze
without a mouse click, but a mouse click seems to start the countdown to
disaster.
This is a fresh install of Win98 on a machine that I have played GPL on
since the day it was released. I am installing a new hard disk.
If I set the mode to software rendering, no freeze. By doing this I was
able to finish calibration of the wheel and entering the driver info. I
then switch the mode to 3DFX. Of course I must leave and re-enter the game.
If I am fast I can actually get into a race. Once in a race, there are no
problems with lockup. When I exit a race and return to the menu screens,
lockup can occur.
My system is an Asus dual proc P2B w/onboard SCSI (only used for my Syquest,
Jaz and CD-ROM). My disk drive (a 6.4 WD) uses the onboard IDE controller.
I have 128 MB RAM. One Intel processor 400 MHz. No overclocking.
I have a Diamond Riva 550 TNT AGP card running the latest driver from
Diamond. I have two Diamond Voodoo 2's SLI'd together. I downloaded the
latest driver from Diamond. It lets me choose between a Diamond driver and
a Reference driver. I also downloaded reference driver from
http://www.racesimcentral.net/. No matter what driver I load for the V2's, the
lockup occurs.
I have tried both DirectX 6 and 6.1 with the above drivers. As long as 3DFX
is chosen, a freeze will happen in the menu screen. The version of DirectX
doesn't seem to change it. It's like waiting for a time bomb to go off.
I have an Mx300, also.
What driver is in control of the menu screen, the TNT or 3DFX??? I'm
assuming the 3DFX driver as the screens look ever so slightly different
depending on the rendering mode.
Should I be tweaking any of the 3DFX options regarding vertical sync and
buffering????
Help!!!!
