GPL - Problem with Lock-up in Menu Screen After Laps Run

by Jim Alliso » Wed, 31 Jul 2002 11:52:08

I'm having a very frustrating intermittant (but frequent) problem with GPL.
When I finish a few laps of offline testing OR online qualifying and I go
back to the menu screen to check my times and tire temps, GPL will lock up
(i.e. the mouse and keyboard freezes). I need to press shift-alt-delete to
shut down GPL and return to Windows - which operates normally. The next time
I do laps the problem may or may not happen. I'm stumped. Can anyone please
suggest something to try. Thanks in advance.

MSFF Port Wheel, Windows 95 (v4.00.950a), Windows virtual memory set to
manual, 50M min, 150M max. All GPL patches up-to-date.

GPL - Problem with Lock-up in Menu Screen After Laps Run

Thanks very much for the reply Eldred (not to mention all the other support
you give to the virtual racing community). No, I'm not running Zone Alarm -
or any other such program (e.g. virus alerts, etc.). Of course I run WinVROC
when online but problem occurs online OR offline.

I tried reinstalling GPL and applying the patches (v1.2, discofix). I
rebooted before trying GPL again - it locked up after the third cycle of
lapping and checking times/temps at Monza. It's starting to lock up more
often now, usually after the third cycle of lapping and checking
times/temps. All other Windows programs (including WinVROC) are operating
fine.

Here are some of the add-on I have:

- 9 Add-on tracks - lock-up occurs on any track, Papy or add-on
- Carsound patch
- Teamfix patch (Honda, Cooper)
- Car dash overrides to Eagle and Lotus - no problems for long period before
lockups started

Basically GPL is useless to me at the moment. Arrrggghhhh! <Jim suffers GPL
withdrawl symptoms>

Thanks for help!

After you did reinstall but before addons tracks and such did you try
running starting with a clean gpl?  If it runs clean then start adding in
patches, then addon's and test between each new item.  Might be worth try, I
had problem once with a track and had to start total clean, then built back
up extras, runs like a champ now.  Good luck

Thanks Steve, I'll give that a try and report back.

Have you tried running it stock, without the teamfix and car dash updates?
Usually you want to test the program in its original state.  Also, check for an
IRQ conflict between your video and sound card.  Those can cause problems too.

Failing that, I'm out of ideas... :-(

p.s. wait - possible overheating?  When your system locks up and you reboot,
check your CPU temps in the SETUP screen...

Not to mention the temp of your video card. GPL was locking up on me
(during races, mind) and after some puzzling it became clear that my
Voodoo2 card was getting too hot, even while I hadn't overclocked it. I
had to underclock it right to 90 from 95 or so to get rid of the crashes.

I still get lockups when selecting some menu items though, so it seems
like there's a weak point somewhere in the GPL code.

Eureka!

When I re-installed GPL many months back, I neglected to handle the bad
glide v2.54 driver issue - this version doesn't work with GPL. I needed to
copy glide v2.53 and two other files (i.e., glide2x.dll, glide3x.dll, and
glide2x.ovl) to the GPL directory to override the problem files. I did this
and it appears that the lock-ups are gone <knock knock knock knock knock
knock>.

Thanks for the suggestions from all the kind souls who responded. I had a
gut feeling that it was a driver issue so I dug into my old saved newsgroup
messages. I learned a valuable lesson - document everything in a "re-install
checklist".

Love GPL drivers, hate computer drivers!! (but wait, GPL drivers are
computer drivers - oh never mind). See you on the track!

Thanks Roger, I sent you a note requesting the driver. Maybe it will improve
my times.
