By latest drivers, do you mean the latest guillemot drivers? If so, I would
try the latest 3dfx dx7 reference drivers.

GPL screen freezes

by Ian Wrigh » Wed, 22 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I have a problem with GPL,  often when in car the screen freezes but the
sound keeps going...  I then have to hit the reset button before I hit
anybody online.  This spoiled a league race for me the other day.

I have tried putting fans on the display card,  running with the computer
case open,  moving the display card as far away as possible from other
cards...  the only thing that helps is to move the GPL graphic detail slider
down to 0, and I still get screen freeze then.

I don't have this prob with other software, only GPL.. which is the sim I
play the most.

Please help

my system:
Intel P3 550
Voodoo Banshee 16MB  (Guillemot Maxi Gamer Phoenix - latest drivers, tried
with and without unofficial GPL banshee patch)
Sound Blaster Live! Value
128MB RAM
Windows 95 OSR2 - DirectX 7a
UK GPL 1.2 with a bunch of great stuff from GPLEA etc.  tried with and
without Carsound patch.

here's hoping

I don't think it's a hardware problem.  I think it's an on-line
problem.  It's happened to me on-line twice now and never off-line.  I
think that the comm engine (for lack of a better term) goes out to
lunch either when transmitting or receiving data so the display never
updates with positional info.  After a few seconds it seems to
time-out or resynch and suddenly you're staring a a wall you're about
to hit. <g>

thanks Eddie and Brett, but it's a problem both on and offline.
I tried the 3dfx banshee reference drivers and thought it had solved it, but
the screen froze 35 minutes into a monaco GP :(  all that driving for
nothing!

oh what am I to do.

I have had this offline too. Ended up doing a clean install of Windows to
fix it.

As I recall I went back to Win98 original from SE. The problems seemed to
exist after I had installed SE. Of course this could have been a red
herring!

There may be less dramatic fixes - but finding it could take longer than a
rebuild.

It may also be worth monitoring your machine for temperature - in case it is
just getting too hot.

I get the screen freeze when I have 8 or more sounds selected in GPL.
It's probably not your problem but it might be worth a try to decrease
the number of sounds.
