OT: Problems with graphics card.

Hi guys, slightly OT but I hope you'll indulge me...

I've just bought a new graphics card (cos GTA3 wouldn't run on my old V3
2000 card) but after installing the card I'm now having trouble with other
games (mostly driving sims).

The new card is a 64mb Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 Kyro 2 and I've also got:
win98se
Asus A7V m/b
Duron 900 cpu
256mb pc100 SDram
15GB IBM h/d (6GB free)
Hercules Fortissimo 2 sound card
Directx8.1.

GPL is now running much slower than with my old V3 card (I'm lucky to get
30fps with almost evrything turned off (on-line racing), but when off-line
it appears to run fine with most options turned on at 36fps.

I'm also having probs with GP3, I'm actually running it faster in software
mode than in hardware mode (where it goes up to 300% cpu occupancy with
options on)?

F1 Racing also appears to be a tad slower.

Superbike racing 2001 is ok.
Rally Championship appears to be ok.
Rally Masters appears to be ok.
Insane appears to be ok.
Colin McRae Rally 2 also appear to be ok.

I've tried the default drivers that came with the card, and also upgraded
to the latest drivers from the Hercules website, but still no improvement.

Is it worth changing the bios settings for this card?

eg: enabling AGP fast write (currently disabled)?

or changing AGP strength (currently x4 strength)?

or changing Graphics Aperture Size (currently 64mb)?

OR any other settings under start, settings, control panel, display,
settings, advanced, etc?

Does any one have any ideas please? Thanks.....

Later.... Bolox, just found this on the web, on a Kyro 2 FAQ site, looks
like this graphics card and GP3 do not go together at all!

===============================

17. How can you explain the slowdowns I encounter when playing GP3?

In most games, for optimal performances, 2D rendering and 3D rendering are
processed once per frame, one after the other, to complete the scene. GP3
functions differently by keeping on alternating rendering 2D and 3D parts
of the scenes.
To process Hidden Surface Removal, the Kyro II chipset needs to have the
whole geometry of the scene to be rendered. GP3 is actually unfriendly to
Kyro II architecture. GP4 won't have such issue with Kyro II.

-------------------------------

Still doesn't explain why GPL is slow though?

many of us who switched from 3dfx to other brandX video cards have had
lots of troubles.  About all I can tell you is to root out every instance of
3dfx.  Go through the registry, track down all the driver files....if you
haven't re-installed win98se lately, now might be a good time to format
windows and re-install...
good luck.

Dave gave you the best advice to completely clean your registry. Run
regedit, then find for each of the following and delete anything that it
finds.

Glide
3dfx
Voodoo

If you're still having troubles, unistall your graphics card and its
drivers, then reinstall. If that doesn't solve your problem, then you're
going to have to do format your hard drive.
