OT: New Graphics Card vs. MB/CPU upgrade

by Kent » Sun, 27 Jan 2002 14:29:36

Current config:
P3 750
Win98SE
512 ram(pc100)
Elsa Gladiac GeForce 2 GTS 32MB
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz audio
Asus P3B-F

Would I be better off upgrading to GeForce Ti 200 64MB or
spending money towards a P4 1.7Ghz or Athlon 1800, with
appropriate Motherboard.

Or GeForce Ti 500 64MB versus motherboard/Cpu upgrade(P4 1.7
or Athlon 1800)?

Current games include F1 2001, N4, CMR2, IL2,CFS2, RTCW &
MOHAA.

I have about $400 to $500 to spend.

Thanks,

Why choose, $500 will buy all of that.

GeForce about $150
1800+ about $160
256 DDR RAM about $75
KT266a mainboard about $100

try www.newegg.com

Yeah, really.

Your problem with doing just one or the other is that you either end up with
a video card that's the major bottleneck, or a CPU that's the major
bottleneck.

I think the processor/MB/RAM is the way to go.  That's a decent card you
have.

for $500, you can build a hell of an Athlon XP DDR system with plenty of
RAM.

I think you can do an AthlonXP 2000+, Abit KG7 and 512MB DDR setup for $500.

I've been through this myself, and I've found N4 to be just as processor
intensive as it is video card intensive.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'm going to do the
processor/motherboard/ram upgrade first and then see how
much money I
have left for possible new graphics card. Hopefully a new
Athlon or
P4 motherboard will fit in my existing case.

Thanks,
