GPL: Graphics card upgrade

by Rob » Sun, 17 Jun 2001 08:26:13

My current system specs: PII 450, 128 meg, 12MB Diamond Monster II (Voodoo
2), also nVidia ZXV 8MB graphics card.
I want to upgrade my graphics card to improve the performance of GPL. I am
also hoping to purchase N4 soon (as soon as it arrives in the country!).
GPL seems to be built to run on Voodoo chips. Is N4 also
'Glide-dependent'? Will I be able to improve the performance of the above
two games by upgrading to a Geforce 2 MX, and using the D3D 'patch'? I ask
concerning the Geforce 2 MX, as it will be an interim upgrade (read: budget)
until I upgrade to a complete new system (6+ months).
Any suggestions concerning what graphics card to purchase would be
gratefully received. How would N4 run on my current system?
  TIA.

GPL: Graphics card upgrade

hi Rob, I recommend to do a double upgrade.. just changing the video card to a
GF2 for example will bring you frustrating results, GPL is CPU hungry, the
single most effective upgrade is a CPU/MOBO one, then to improve image quality
over a V2, you would need to upgrade the video card.

GPL with the D3D patch brings excitting results, I'll show you why, bring your
mouse over these images (check the last one), you'll have to let the page to
load all images, these are quite big, since I wanted to show the quality you can
achieve with them by using low compression level of JPG

switch your desktop to 1024 x 768, if you use IE, then do F11 when the page is
loaded :

This is part of my Geforce 3 review :

and you can see my D3D new rasterizer article here :

sorry about the spam link.. think it's relevant to you questions

btw GF3 and GF2 Ultra cards, works better with 800 Mhz + CPU, anything less will
be a big bottle neck with the card
