GPL Graphics Cards

I'm currently running GPL using the OpenGL driver on a P2 400 with 64Mb of
RAM using a Riva TNT 16 Mb AGP chip mounted on-board on an Intel motherboard
which does not have an AGP slot.  I also have an SBlive 1024 soundcard and
an LWFF with CH pedals.

With this I get a framerate of about 20fps at the start a race with 12 cars
and at near 36fps during the race running at 800x600.  This is of course
with the mirror repaint frequency reduced, number of sounds set to 6, the
detail slider at about half way and a clean boot with all processes stopped
using the useful Enditall program.

What I would like to know is would I get an improvement by switching to a
Voodoo 3 2000 PCI?  Is this a worthwhile upgrade to my system?  Would I be
abe to run at 1024x768 with this card?

Also, does the Voodoo 3 3000 offer a significant improvement over the 2000
in GPL?  Here in England it is twice as expensive as the 2000 card.  Is it
twice as good or can I make do with a 2000 model?

Bear in mind I've already spent more than I intended to get my PC running
well with GPL.  I'm sure this is a problem many people have experienced and
can relate to!

At the moment I am mostly playing GPL and Rally Championship. This is of
course between playing Championship Manager 99/00, a game which eats away
more time than GPL ever has!

Cheers

I have a PII 350 and v3-3000-agp and run at
1024x768 with most all of the graphics options on
and get 36 fps except at the start.  I also have
a SB Live and pdpi game port each of which helps
fps a bit and dont use ff which costs a bit of
fps.  With your 400 I would guess you would get
about the same fps I do.  IMHO there is little or
no diff in fps between the 3000 and 2000 at
1024.  And lots of ppl have reported overclocking
the 2000 to 3000 speed with no additional
cooling.  Hope this help.  Brian

Hi
Before buying new hardware, try the latest Nvidia reference drivers for the
TNT from www.nvidia.com and set the buffer flipping mode (somewhere deep in
the display properties) to "Use block transfer".

Buy a CHEAP 3dfx2 12Mo, about $50 MAX and THAT will improve your gpl..

I run on a k62-350 with 64 Mo a good video (guillemot cougar 32Mo) and an old 3dfx2 12, I get 36 alone, 18 at race start and 22-23 in the race, with all sorts of shitty programs running and no mirrors setting.

What is this enditall program, sounds interesting, can you post it if it is not too big ?

I got Enditall here:

BTW, I bought a V3 2000 today and have really noticed the difference.

Cheers for the advice.  Along with a couple of e-mails I received, your
comments persuaded me to get out my credit card.

Anyway, after spending ages resolving conflicts on my system, I've got the
new card running and as you said, it certainly makes a huge difference.  I'm
now getting 27fps at the back of a 20 car grid at 1024x768 with mirrors that
work and 10 sounds.  Superb!

Phil,

     Personally I run a Voodoo3 3000 AGP, and get a solid 36 fps everywhere
except at the starts,& 1024x786 resolution with the following system.

AMD K6-2/450
Voodoo3 3000 AGP
64 MB of SDRAM
PCI 128 sound card

I run with all graphics on except cars only in my mirrors, detail
slider dead center, and 6 sounds. Then last night after some sound advice
from the guys at WinVROC chat, I turned off the wheel, and driver details. I
got a solid 36fps everywhere including the start.

So to answer your question I would get a Voodoo3 2000 PCI board, it
will make a difference.

Your mileage may vary - I have a similar system but a Celeron at 460
and 128Mb SDRAM SBlive sound card.  I have to turn almost everything off
to get 36fps at 1024x786 and usually end up in 800x600 which still won't
run well with everything on.

Really?  I have an AMD K6-3/400, V3000 AGP, 128MB ram, SBlive.  Although I've
gained about 7fps from the K62/350 I had in it 2 days ago, I'm nowhere NEAR
36fps at the start.  And I'm running in 640x480...  I would *think* the K6-3
would be more 'efficient' than a 2, even at a slightly lower mhz...
But obviously, something's wrong here.  Shouldn't I still get higher
framerates?  I get 22 fps on the grid at Spa.  It used to be about 15, clearing
to 34 or so...

Eldred, I just had a thought, do you have the driver arms enabled?  If
you do then turn them off.  Not only will it improve your framerate, but
I also find them very distracting whilst driving and there's no way I
could turn the times I do with them on. :-)

Buy the V3 2000, and overclock it to run as fast as the V3 3000, you can
even overclock it to run as fast as the V3 3500 in some cases. I've just
installed a V3 2000 here and am running it (the default clock speed
is 143) at 166MHz, I'm going to try 170 or even 175 later....

BTW, To overclock the V3 cards, check out the overclocking section of my
webpage.
