GPL: Graphics Cards

by Roger Middleto » Sun, 24 Jun 2001 23:09:18

I'm currently running GPL on a PIII/667 system, equipped with a low-end
nVidia Vanta graphics card.

I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with the glitchy OpenGL performance at
640x480, and the game's unplayable at any higher resolution. I've installed
the GPL 1.2 patch, and both the OpenGL and Direct3D enhancements.

I'm therefore looking to replace the Vanta with a cheap, readily available
card which will run GPL well at around 1024x768. I'm not interested in
Quake, Half-Life, etc - my only concern is that it runs GPL and occasionally
GP3 to a good standard.

GeForce is the obvious way to go, but I have a feeling that such a powerful
card would be overkill for my fairly simple needs!

Many thanks for any suggestions.

I doubt it.  I have a backup P2/400 machine with a TNT2 card in it that runs
GPL acceptably well with both OGL and D3D.  You'll be amazed at the
improvement if you plug in a Geforce2, or even a GF2MX.  With the prices
dropping, I'd get at least the GF2, though, if not an Ultra.  You can always
use it later, and IMO your machine is more vidcard-limited than CPU-limited.

The GeForce2 MX 32 mb card is an inexpensive solution for you, and should
run GPL in d3d just fine.
I have the Hercules Prophet2 MX and am very pleased with it.

Thanks for your replies.

How about a Matrox Millennium G450?  I used to have a G400 which ran GPL
beautifully at 1024x768 - this time, I need a dual head card, and this is 40
GBP cheaper than the equivalent dual head GeForce MX.

Any thoughts appreciated.

The Voodoo 3 cards are still readily available, and pretty cheap these
days.   That's what I went to when I finally decided that I needed to
replace my Rendition-based card.

Roger,

I had a V3 3000 and decided to upgrade to a GF2 GTS  32megs. I'm very happy
with it. I run GPL 36 fps at 1152x864 (PIII 600). The V3 3000 was nice for
GPL but not for N4. Much better frame rates with the GF2. Don't spend your
money on a GF3. It's a great card but from what people told me you really
need to upgrade your system to really appreciate it. You be able to find one
for under $200 US . I went with the Elsa because of the video in/out option.
Good luck

Chris

I have three machines ... all with 3dfx cards. I have just picked up a
Voodoo3 3000 PCI for 35UKP (New) Now that is a deal!

Can I ask where you got it from?  Do you have a web address? ;)

Check out www.newegg.com for some good prices (especially on the OEM
cards).

GPL: Graphics Cards

Good, have I got a question for you, then...

I've been happy running GPL on a voodoo3-3000, my machine being a 633mhz
celeron overclocked to 950.  It's stable as anything, runs all day, etc etc
but I've been eyeing screenshots of GPL with FSAA and today I finally took
the plunge.  I picked up a 64mb Geforce 2 MX, after reading all kinds of
comparisons with V5-5500 and the V3 I already own.  I figured even if it was
the same speed, the FSAA alone would be worth the (small) price.

Anyway, installed the card.  Downloaded the latest drivers.  Works fine on
SCGT but GPL now gives me 15 FPS using the D3D rasteriser instead of a rock
solid 36fps with the V3.  I turned FSAA on & off, and I've fiddled with all
the settings in the nVidia control panel but there must be something I'm
still doing wrong.  I mean, this thing is slower than the Voodoo I in my old
Celeron 300a machine.

So, does anyone have the definitive tweak?  I've seen plenty of posts like
yours, saying it's smooth, runs fast, high FPS, better than a V3.  What else
could the problem be?

Many thanks for any help
