GPL and graphic card......... yes, again :)

Hi freaks,
Atm I'm using an old ATI PCI in combination with an Orchid Righteous 3D, but
I want to get an Hauppauge WinTV DVBs to try out Internet via Satellite,
hoping for better and faster connections when hosting. Problem is, no more
vacant PCI-Slot left to plug it in, so I want to kick the V1 as well as the
ATI in the bin and get an AGP-graphics-card.
Question: Which one? Voodoo3? GeForce? Wait for GP3? Wait for EA's sim? In
GPL I can only run max 640x480 due to limitations of my beamer (projector),
so resolution doesn't matter to me, nor do any other applications or games,
nor does the price as I buy only the best available on the market as u can
see above, but I only buy every 2 years or so :)  BTW got a P2 400 running,
don't intend to replace that one yet, only about 1 year old. Any
suggestions, folks?

Has any1 got the WinTV DVBs running already and hosted GPL with it? EON? IP?
Who is faster?

I've heard that satellite connections have high latency (600 + )
so not good for games, But i've read that one year ago so it could have changed

Satellite, by it's very nature will be useless for online ***.
There is a high latency and sending data is only as fast as your modem.
For downloading it is unbelievably fast though.

I wouldn't bet on it improving. A large part(~.25s) of that time is the
signal travelling up to the sattelite and from the sattelite  to your dish,
add to that the normal delays in the internet to the sattelite uplink
station.

Not very likely... communication sattelites circle the earth at 28.000 kms
over the surface of the earth. That means the beam takes at least 1/10th of
a second to even get to the sattelite (28.000 divided by the speed of
light). Then another 10th back to Earth, then to the server, which replies
(ping!), then back to the sattelite (another 10th), then back to earth. So
you lost already 4/10th sending your packet to space and back. Combined
with some routers and other stuff, 0.5 secs is about minimum. Compared to
the 100ms that ADSL should bring you, you see satellite will never be a
feasible option.

For GPL your best choice is V3 at the moment. In your case I would
wait for F1 2000 (begin March), and decide then. The GeForce is a
great card, but it has features which aren't used by games right now
(T&L for example), so I wouldn't consider it for the moment. You also
could wait for the 3dFX V5 (skip V4!), which will have Full Screen
Anti Aliasing, and that can improve the image quality of GPL a lot!
Especially in your case, using 640x480...

Also for GPL the V3 2000 is sufficient. From what I observe when OC-ing
it which seems to be comfirmed by other people here then there is no
(noticeable) performance improvement when the V3 clock rate is
increased.

Hi Markus,

The V3 suits to your CPU and should give you a 36 fps during race (not the
start) with all details on at 1024 X ???

Seen it, bought it, never regret it :-))

Jens

BTW There is a benchmark-page at http://www.dirkwagner.de/benchmark/

Would be the same what I have in the moment.
Ping between 350 and 700 (still raceable).
