D3D or OpenGL for Nascar4?

by Jeff Glanzma » Fri, 24 Aug 2001 00:12:47

Hello,

I just got Nascar4 and installed it. When it came to
the option where by default it has D3D, I left it at that.
I see in the manual that it says that OpenGL may give
better performance.

I didn't know if my graphics card supported OpenGL so that is why
I left it at the default.

I have a 32 MB DDR ATI Radeon 4X AGP graphics card.
I went to a website and from what I gathered, this card does
support OpenGL.

My question is, should I switch to the OpenGL in the settings?
Will I see a big difference between the two, and is it worth it
to make the switch? Is D3D more stable than OpenGL?
(A friend of mine said he had some problems
with OpenGL. Don't know the specific problems he had.)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Jeff

Did you even try it?  You can try both display modes and see if you get
better frame rates with one or the other or any stability problems.

Same card as my system.  ATI cards have always had excellent OpenGL and the
Radeon does it very well.  In fact if you look at your advanced video
properties you will see a whole tab just for OpenGL settings.

As far as N4 goes, try both and pick the one you like best.  In most games
with a choice, I prefer OpenGL as the graphics are a little more blended and
less harsh than D3D (Homeworld, and Half-Life are good examples of that).
