GPL: Let's tell Papy we want an OpenGL or D3D Patch!

by UnserFa » Sat, 06 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Can you guys (and gals) out there help me out and tell Papy that we want an
OpenGL or D3D patch for GPL?  I have a Diamond Viper V770 Ultra (TNT2 Ultra
chip).  I never bought GPL because the thought of it w/ no mirrors (more or
less) just ruins it.  If they can make an official patch...I would buy it
i-m-m-e-d-i-a-t-e-l-y!  :o)

God bless,
Loren

There is a beta open gl patch aimed at the tnt boards.  The problem
with the mirrors isn't so much Papyrus' but Nvidia.  Unfortunate tho.

Yeah, so that I can use my Elsa Revelator 3D glasses. <G>  Only works on D3D
API.

Are there ANY boards that the GL patch has 100% acceleration with?

The way a GL driver works, if the card can not provide the function
with hardware acceleration, it does it with software.  So to say the
the GL software driver is broken is a bit of a misnomer.  The card
works fine, or GPL wouldn't work at all.

I was just curious if anyone has gotten good performance from the GL
patch on ANY board, even the expensive commercial ones with very
good drivers.

And a recent post indicated that it ran decently on an ATI Rage Fury, so
there is hope for others.  I think it is more a case of the board
manufacturers making a decent OpenGL ICD, and not just a "Quake miniGL".

Anyone tried it with Nvidia's new GeForce boards? That's supposed to have
great OpenGL performance.

I think that my Diamond 770 (non Ultra) does just fine in GPL, with
the OpenGL patch. I used to use GPL on a P200 with a Voodoo1 so
anything was an improvement. I run at 1024*768, detail just to the
right of center, no arms, only cars in mirrors, all track side, maybe
no people? can't remember, no crowds, some other options turned off,
mirror refresh set to the default setting for the OPenGL patch. At
Monza I get 27-36fps. Not as stellar as it could be, but not horrible
either. I have very few problems with video lockups and such. I
installed the detonator drivers and hated the mirrors so I went back
to the drivers that came with my Dell.

I can't lie, I have been keeping an eye out for a Quantum 3D X24 for
cheap, but they just don't exist right now. (when I say cheap I mean
cheap!)
