I believe I read Grant Reeve made this patch on his own time. That's
probably why it's unsupported. Because Papy didn't pay anyone to make it.
But everybody's thanking them. Although I know everyone means well, but be
sure to give credit where it's deserved.  Both us and Papy are lucky to have
people like that.

It's unsupported because Papy "leaked" the patch.  By releasing it as an
unsupported patch they don't have to convince the Sierra suits that it
is worthy of release and don't have to wait months for Sierra to test it
and build a pretty install wrapper on it.  But you are right Grant
worked on it on his own time and deserves the kudos (as well as Papy for
giving it to us).  Same goes for the disco-fix.  Even the official patch
was basically done on Randy's own time.  These guys are as hooked on
real racing simulations as we are.... That's why they can deliver such
great products....

Thanks Papy.....  (and Papy isn't just a company... but all of the fine
folks who work there).

Grant's choice, DN's choice.  YOUR choice to spend the money(or not).

My guess is that Grant did it "in his own time" while on the clock at
Papy.  The patch appears on the OFFICIAL Papyrus Web site, and it's
listed as a "BETA" patch.  That indicates at least SOME level of
support form Papy -- this is NOT an "unsupported" or "unsanctioned"
piece of software, as some would lead us to believe.

If it was done on Grant's own PERSONAL time, then I thank him for
sharing that amazing labor of love with us, but my guess is that it was
created as a part of the learning/development process for applying the
GPL engine to the upcoming N4 release.

Either way, thanks are required, so thanks to Grant for the work
(regardless of how or why it came about), and thanks to Papy for making
it available to us in beta form.

% Hey, I thought my installer was pretty spiffy...

errrrr excuse, me.... it should have read.... "build a bloated
unnecessary install wrapper vs. the spiffy Papy installer...."  I will
be more careful next time. <G>

Thank Grant, not Papy for the D3D patch

Eric Busch reported previously that the implementation for N4 is
completely different than for GPL and that Grant did this simply so he
could use GPL on his Geoforce2-equipped computer.

I believe what we are actually seeing is the back-filling of GPL with
features that were developed during the creation of N4.  They
developed or figured something out during the N4 development process
and one of the GPL people decided it wouldn't be too hard to port it
into GPL.  I suspect that was particularly true for the "no-disco"
patch where, in refining the on-line play code for N4 they discovered
a flaw, corrected it, and then backfilled the fix into GPL.

I do not, in any way, want to diminish their contribution.  I simply
want to explain that they're taking advantage of the R&D funding for
N4 to bring GPL along and take it closer to what they want to play
with themselves.  Indeed a "labor of love" which I certainly
appreciate!
