GPL 1.1 patch - what's in it?

says...

The only thing I'm fairly certain of is improved firewall support, and
that's bases on an article Randy Cssidy posted here back on 03/08.

Beyond that single item, I don't think anybody but Papy knows what's in
the patch.

I have a feeling that they're going to be fixing the car# problem when
racing online where after a while, people start showing up in car #0.

As for being released, again, nobody but Papy knows when that's gonna
happen.

Randy Cassid

GPL 1.1 patch - what's in it?

by Randy Cassid » Sat, 24 Apr 1999 04:00:00

The GPL 1.1 patch is not out yet, but I'm hoping it won't be long now.

It will include the ability to launch GPL as either a multiplayer
client or server with command line parameters.  The VROC folks already
have a version that takes advantage of this, and I believe the GPL
SpyBoy folks do as well.

You will be able to run a dedicated GPL server; i.e. a server that
repeatedly and automatically cycles through a list of races (which you
specify in a new server.ini file).  It is _not_ a daemon in the Un*x
sense of things.  That is, it still brings up the GPL window and
displays stuff, though it does not use sound or 3D graphics, thus
reducing CPU load.

You will also (by connecting with the proper password) be able to
control a GPL server remotely.  You just connect as if you were a
client, but all the widgets that would normally be grayed out for a
client are accessible.  More than one client can be the "boss" for a
server, so they'll need to cooperate.

We have run GPL 1.1 on systems running NT5 Beta 2 without problems.  I
believe we've also run it on NT4 systems with SP3, but don't quote me
on that.  We've also run it on dual-CPU NT systems, and it uses both
CPU's.  Because of GPL's architecture, I don't believe it would use
more than two, but should run OK if there are more.

What? It uses both CPUs under NT!? I guess I better start saving for that
dual PII board! Or it just uses both CPUs and runs as fast as with one CPU?
Anything about ride hight issue? Banshee and Voodoo3 fix?

I believe it will run the physics on one CPU and the rendering on the
other, allowing for a noticeable performance boost on some systems (this
will likely be most evident at the back of the starting grid during a
full field race).  The Banshee and Voodoo3 fix will have to come from
3dfx in the form of working drivers.

WOW! Randy, great news, I think this is going to make GPL and VROC spread
like Quake2 and those kind of games where you can put servers full time,
not to mention people who can probably leave these kind of servers up on their
wor machines on T3 lines. This kind of functionality is what made the Quake
server scene so widespread that there are now thousands of servers you can
play on at any time of the day.

Kudos to you guys for adding this server functionality, what a pleasant
surprise for someone like me who was just hoping v1.1 would fix the networking
so that I can finally convert my home network to Linux IP/Masquerade.

Thanks.

Seeyas on the track.

GPL 1.1 patch - what's in it?

by Trip » Sun, 25 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Randy,

I have two questions that I hope you can answer...

1. Will the patch allow the race host to specify the car class that
everyone joining the race runs? I'd love to host F3 (novice trainer)
races all the time, but as it is now, anyone can come in with an F1 car
and there's not much to be done about it. Letting the host specify the
class to run would go a long way to solveing this. Ideally, the hsot
should be allowed to include any or all classes in the race (to allow
for mixed calss races)

2. Would it be possible for the server to broadcast connection portion
of the core.ini settings to each client as it joins the race? The would
make life a LOT easier than hoping for everyone to know what settings to
use.

Thanks for any answer you can provide,

Trips

This is just outstanding Randy. It is amazing to me that Sierra is allowing
you to do this rather than setting it up as a user pay system of racing I
guess the lessons learnt from Quake have filtered through ie good free
online play sells CD's.
Would you know if there is any chance of a Linux port? Another lesson from
Quake.

Better yet, will this technology also be available to Nascar 3 when it comes
out? Thanks fellas

Sounds great, but I was expecting heaps of gameplay improvements.

I'm expecting them to fix the bug that turns auto gears on whenever you go
into the "driver info" page.

That sounds great, but as someone living in the back of beyond and who will
probably never be able to play online I'm rather hoping that some other
non-online tweaks will be in the offing.  Like the ability to save the game
in the middle of a GP.  There is nothing more annoying than being an hour
into a race and having to leave the game and loose all you have done because
you know the job you have been called out to will probably last all night
and then some...please :)
