Well, the general issue here is: Papy, please don't send us to the
reconnect screen after a disconnect. Leave us in the current race
screen, where we can observe best times, look at our tire temps, see
replays, etc. It is frustrating to get discoed... but even worse when
you realize all the data from that race is lost.
No, I don't see Papy writing that one ;-)

In RL, you would burn out the clutch in 3 secs...

Those dog boxes are ***for 1st gear:-) Heck, it's a breeze to do
monaco, IRL It's almost impossible to use 1st gear in a proper
racecar...

I guess the big ratio between wheels and engine in 1st gear makes it more
difficult than the other gears. The bigger difference there is between input
shaft (pre clutch) and output shaft you have, the more difficult it will be
getting the thing into gear, isn't it?
I think they feathered the gas with while braking to hit the right revs to
change gears efficiently. I think they call it the Toe-heel technique. And I
use it on my own car as well, takes a bit of labour away from the clutch and
box...
The difficulty in engaging 1st gear is surely a part of the explanation of
why 1st gear is rarely used in racing (only for starts)...
I think the 1st gear in a modern day F1 car is easier to use, but it quite
often brakes, I think. The lower gears seem more susceptible to brakage
than the higher ones.

I think on most recent gearboxes, 1st is on a separate shaft, at least
you never change first gear when swapping ratios on the race boxes I've
been working on. Heck, the sports-prototype I'm used to does about 75MPH
in 1st:-)
Oh yeah, and still do, well, good drivers do anyway. It's not so much
the complete heel-and-toe as it used to be, now it's more a case of
dabbing the gas with the heel when on the brake downshifting, to balance
the revs. This is done to make the transitions of engine braking less
severe (not upsetting the balance of the car), and also to save the
engine/box. Look at some of the people racing who can't manage this,
they crush the dog rings in the boxes, and have frequent spins when hard
on the brakes downshifting....
(sound: crunch-screech-whiiiiine) tires lock up for a sec, engine
overrevs...:-P
Unfortunately (?), this can't be enjoyed in GPL...hehe
As for upshifting, you just lift off the gas, and shift..no clutch.
Correct. LOL, my dad had this horrible experience in a race once; he was
so certain he was in 1st, but in fact it was 3rd, and he stalled--twice!
:-)
Yeah, they've catered for it...but those boxes are of another dimension,
you merely pull or push the lever, and hydraulic motors do the job for
you...I remember reading the speed of which a modern F1 box can change
from N-7th and back, it was done in less than a second(!)

Well, the every day car has syncro rings, so the same principles don't apply
directly, but still, if you hit the right revs/speed ratio, you can change gears
very fast without even using the clutch! I do NOT do this on my everyday car,
though, syncromesh rings are cheap, but pretty hard to get to! You should know...
Hmm, I have noticed that I change the brake pedal pressure at the downshifting
points, I tend to ease off a bit right before changing down another gear. I
started doing this without thinking about it because I didn't want to upset the
car too much, I have no idea if that is a sensible thing to do.
OK, but worse things might happen when you miss a gear than stalling the engine at
standstill!!! Say, getting 2nd instead of 4th in that looong fast right! Hahaha
Horrendous speed, that is for sure. I think they use electronics to match input
shaft and output shaft speed through adjusting revs of the engine, and then,
"clonk" sliding that 1000 USD fibre wheel into place... Grud knows what material
the main shaft and layshafts are made of... We can only speculate.
I have heard that a F1 box costs around 150 000 USD...
