OT: Epox Mobo/RAM Question

by BRH » Fri, 11 Jan 2002 08:36:17

Sorry for the off-topic post, but I know that many of you have upgraded
to the Epox 8KHA+ motherboard with an Athlon processor.

I just received my 8KHA+ today and plan to install it this weekend.  To
try and make this go as smooth as possible, I have a few questions:

1.  I want to continue to use my SoundBlaster Live Value card.  How do I
disable the onboard audio/gameport,etc on the motherboard?  The manual
does not seem to address this.

2.  I ordered 2 sticks of DDR2100 Crucial RAM, as well.  How do I verify
that it's DDR2100 and not DDR1600?  The stickers on the RAM say "256MB,
DDR, 266mhz, CL2.5", but they also have a number which starts as
"16VDTT.....".  The sticker which says "www.crucial.com" also has a
number on it which ends in "....16T".  All of this makes me wonder
whether I got DDR1600 by mistake.  Do these numbers mean anything, or is
there a way to verify which RAM I have after the mobo is installed (at
boot-up, perhaps)?

Again, I apologize for the OT post, but I know that you guys are
knowledgable on this stuff.

Thanks,

You disable both the onboard sound and the onboard gameport in the bios, you
have to search around in there a little but it is there in two seperate
areas. Be sure and do this when you first boot up your system.

Don't know if there is a way to verify, but you should be fine, I don't
think I have heard of ddr1600, and if it's 266 mhz rated it is 2100.

No problem, feel free to holler if you have any other questions, your going
to like your new system.

If you have ddr1600 ram it is rated as 200mhz and ddr2100
as 266mhz.

Read this thread on the Epox 8kha+ board, this guy knows his stuff.  The
included bios settings work very well. Thanks to Brian Bowles for turning me on
to it.

I have vague plans of upgrading in the next few months and I've noticed this
Epox board mentioned a few times now on RAS. Could I ask those of you with
Epox 8KHA+ boards to answer a few questions? (please please!)...

1. How have you found the board so far? Any major problems or unexpected
delights?
2. What cpu are you using?
3. If you had to buy a new computer tomorrow would you buy the same mobo?
4. How many watts is your power supply? Is it enough?

Thanks very much in advance! I am way off topic, sorry for that, but there
are (as BRH points) so very many of you that know what you're talking about
when it comes to computers (and a whole bunch that haven't a clue hehe) :0)

Jim

my PC: Abit BX6 Rev 1.0, PII450, 256mb PC100 ram, 4.3gig Seagate, GF2 GTS,
etc.

No big problems to speak of so far (that I didn't create myself). I'm
running an Asus V8200 TI-500 video card and had lockups until I reinstalled
the VIA 4-in-1 drivers with the AGP driver in "normal" mode instead of
"turbo". Also, the additional USB ports seem to be acting a bit flaky but I
haven't spent any time debugging that yet.

Athlon XP1800+

I think so.

350W and it seems to be enough. Apparently this board is sensitive to low
voltage on the 5V rail. Mine is at 4.92V and is OK but some Enermax power
supplies are only putting out 4.5V and this causes big problems with this
board.

Thanks Wayne. I didn't know about the power supply issue but I guess as long
as you have enough watts it's never a problem... useful to know about it
though. Cheers.

This board is awesome for me so far, not a glitch.

Athlon XP1600+

Yes

300w, but plan on ordering a 360 or 431 in near future to be safe. Main
thing is to have a quality power supply.

Hope it helps,

OT: Epox Mobo/RAM Question

Cheers Don. If your 300W is enough can I ask why you want more? I'm pretty
unsure about power supplies as they never really seem to get reviewed or
commented on when the big hardware sites review stuff. I wouldn't need to
run multiple hard drives or more than one CD drive etc so I'm not sure I'd
need a 400W monster. Currently running 235W with no probs but I'm aware I'll
probably need more if I decide to run an Athlon XP on a 8KHA+

Also, is the 8KHA+ a completely new mobo? Or is it a revision of an older
model? Someone somewhere once told me to never buy a brand new "first of the
range" because the rev 1.1 model will always have more bug fixes, more
compatibility etc - any thoughts?

Thanks

Jim

Well, probably don't need it but I figure better too much than not enough as
I add things to my system. Again, the main thing is to get a good quality
power supply, like Antec, Enermax, PC Power & Cooling, etc.
I would go with a min 300W for that 8KHA+ board.

The 8KHA+ is the kt266a board, the 8kha is the kt266. Defintely go with the
+.
You won't be unhappy with this board.

OT: Epox Mobo/RAM Question

by BRH » Sat, 12 Jan 2002 11:31:17

OK.  I found where and how to disable the onboard sound and gameport in the
BIOS.  But I haven't found some basic information that I think I'll need.

That is:  In order to run an AMD Athlon XP 1700+, what should the default values
be for voltage, FSB speed, multiplier, etc?  I'm talking about what the values
should be WITHOUT trying to overclock it.

And, will the mobo automatically detect the CPU and intelligently default to the
proper values, or will I need to set any jumpers first?  (Jumper JCK1 comes to
mind, since it controls the CPU Bus speed -- 100 or 133)

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

First thing you should do is set the motherboard jumper to 133, it comes
with it set at 100. See the manual for the corrrect setting.
When you boot, go into the bios and load optimized defaults. Everything else
will be recognized automatically. If i am not mistaken, teh default core
voltage is 1.75v
The Athlon XP is mulitplier locked, so you don't have to worry with that
anyway.

Thanks, Don.

I couldn't find that kind of simple, straightforward info anywhere!  Lots of

Thanks again.

No problemo, and don't forget to disable that sound and gameport on that
first boot as well.

Good luck,
