OT: System Upgrade problem - EPOX

by bertr » Mon, 21 Jan 2002 04:06:47

Guys, I know that this is OT, but it's geared toward getting my N4
installed again, and I know that some of you have upgraded to Epox
Mobo's recently.  So, I hope that I can find some help here, or at least
be pointed to a NG which can address this problem.

I have a Yamaha SCSI CD-Burner which I can't get working with the Epox
8Kha+ Mobo.  My plain jane DVD drive can't load/read the N4 CD, so I've
always used this burner with N4.  (Besides, I want to be able to burn
CD's).

The problem is that after I install the SCSI card, the system
automatically puts it on IRQ 11, which is in conflict with the blasted
SBLive Value Card.  On my old system, my SCSI card was on IRQ 10 and ran
fine.  Win 98SE won't allow me to just switch IRQ's, though.

Can someone here, with this mobo, provide me any guidance on moving this
SCSI card to a free IRQ (or at least one that "plays nice" with another
device)?  Please be specific with any BIOS settings that I might need to
adjust.  I've tried setting the PNP OS setting to both ON and OFF;
played with the "Resources Controlled by" settings, and dabbled with the
INT Pin Assignments (all of these are under PnP/PCI Configuration
section of the BIOS), but nothing has solved the problem.  I have also
tried moving the SCSI card to other PCI slots - no dice.

Any suggestions, short of replacing the CD burner and/or the SBLive
card, would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!
Bert

I don't have the Epox board, but the SBLive is notorious for hogging
IRQ's with other cards, primarily network cards.

I had this issue with an Abit board. The BIOS allowed shutting down
the common IRQ. When I did this, the SBLive and the network card
selected different IRQ's and worked fine.
The down side to this is that someone else I know that had the same
problem had both cards fighting for a new common IRQ once the previous
one was shut down.

I've kept the problem from re-occurring on subsequent installs by
putting the SBLive in the PCI slot second from the AGP.
I believe this slot doesn't share IRQ's.

OT: System Upgrade problem - EPOX

Thanks. Tim.

Somehow this appears to have worked itself out.  <knock wood>.

I ended up uninstalling the sound card and SCSI card, then re-installed the
SCSI card first, then re-installed the sound card.  I still had the
conflict.  Frustrated, I shut the PC down.

A few hours later, I returned and fired the PC up again and - VOILA - no
conflicts!  It must have been the SCSI elves that fixed it!  8-)

So far, no crashes.  (Keeping fingers crossed).  I got lots of stuff sharing
IRQ 11 though -- SCSI card, Network card and secondary TV video card.  Then I
have both my Voodoo5 card and the SB Live sharing IRQ 10!  Who knows.......

Thanks again,
Bert
