Are there any newer motherboards that can run 1.8G+ processors but that
still support 168-pin PC133 SDRAM ?

I have an aging system (Slot 1 PIII processor in a 440BX-based motherboard)
in which I'd like to upgrade the CPU and motherboard.  The catch is that I'd
like to avoid replacing all my PC133 RAM, if that's possible (I have 768MB
worth of decent Crucial memory and it seems a shame to replace it if I don't
have to).  I'd also like to keep using my ATX case with 300W power supply if
I can.

Is there a MB/processor out there that will let me do that?

Thanks

(Umm, and to make this slightly on-topic.... I would use my newly spruced-up
system to race GPL, N2002, and F12002 :-)

I found this one:
http://usa.asus.com/mb/socket478/p4b/overview.htm

It does not have 533Mhz FSB (only 400) but I guess you have to sacrifice
something to use your old RAM.
It supports at least P4 2.4GHz and you can use your old case and PSU.
ASUS P4SRD-VM and P4S133 also support SD-Ram.

Yes the ASUS P4B is exactly what I'm using to allow me to reuse my SDRAM.
Its stable and works well. It *is* slower in various games than models like
the ASUS P4B-533 and better but it allowed me to get the video card I wanted
and stay within my computer toy budget. It is roughly 10-15% slower than
the faster board above with approximately the same CPU power. Works fine
with GPL, NR2002 and various flightsims

Search on google for the K7S5A - good value. Handles sdram 133 or ddr. I've
just upgraded from 1.2 duron to 1.8+ athlon

I went with the ECS K7S5A MB mentioned by the last poster.  Support for
both SDRAM and DDR on the same board is a clever idea for those of us not
wanting to get rid of all our SDRAM just yet.  With the ECS board and an
Athlon XP 2000+ processor, I'll have a rejuvenated system for about $140.
Just the sort of solution I was hoping for.  Thanks for the input all.

Well, it DOES limit your choices a little

You CAN run a P4, but it would be a bit of a bottleneck as the P4 uses a
lot of memory bandwidth and you'd also need the "P4 connectors" on your
PSU, which your PSU may or may not have depending on how old it is

Your best bet would be to get something like the ASUS A7V133C MoBo for
AMD based CPU's, AMD doesn't depend as heavily on memory bandwidth as P4
based CPU's does, and it's cheaper

The ASUS board may be out of production now, very few MoBo makers make
SDRAM based MoBo's these days, but you can still find them and as a
bonus they're dirt cheap, I've seen them as low as 50 dollars on
Pricewatch, that particular MoBo will accept anything up to an AMD
2100+, it may take the 2200/2400 as well, but don't hold me to it, it
also accepts 768 MB of RAM, which isn't always the case

MSI had one called K7T PRO Turbo2 or something, the exact name escapes
me, just make sure that the MoBo you buy supports 133(266) FSB, not just
133 Mhz Memory Bus (easy to get them confused in the heat of the moment)

If you go the AMD route, make SURE you get heatsink/fan that is up to
the job, they run a lot hotter than your old P3

Your PSU should be just fine for this

Beers and cheers

Well, the last one I remember was the ECS K7V5A or something like that.  It
had DDR and PC-133 slots.

That was a while ago, though.  It had the SIS 765 Athlon Chipset which
suprised the hell out of everyone when it came out and tested to be the
fastest DDR chipset available at the time.

I am not sure if this board is still sold, though.  If you find it, check
the specs (and BIOS update read-me's) to make sure it supports the processor
you have.

It was an inexpensive board too, around $79.  I think it was pretty well
liked.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of too.

I have two of these boards, one is version 1.0 and the other is version
3.1a.
They both have built in LAN and sound. I was having some CMOSS checksum
errors when I first boot up on the version 3.1a board but I found a web site
at...http://pub65.ezboard.com/bk7s5amotherboardforum (watch out for the pop
ups tho), that had lots of info on these boards, I was able to download a
new Bios from there that made the board stop loosing it's cmos all the time.
There is also a news group devoted to ECS at...
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.elitegroup. I bought these boards from
NEWEGG.com for like $53.99 ea. and also a AMD 1600+ for the revision 3.0
board that was like $52.99 plus something like $6.00 shipping I think, but
it sounds like you have already bought yours. Good luck
