GPL 'Net via LAN Problems - Help?

by Bill Niemey » Fri, 16 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I'm trying to race GPL online from work over the Net and not making it.
My machine is connected to our LAN which in turn is connected to the
Net over a T1 line. I can successfully ping GPL servers with GPL Net
Agent but when I try with GPL it says the following...

Opening Channel
Opening Network Device
Timed Out Opening Communications Channel
Closing Network Device
Closing Channel

I've got a static IP address which GPL seems to see. I tried the
default GPL setup then various core.ini tweaks I found on various
web pages and always the same result.

Anybody have some suggestions? Other than finally buying a state
of the art machine for the home?

I'm eager to demonstrate my Riccardo Rosset level of GP driving skills...

Have you checked out Alison Hines' Online FAQ? FWIR it covers LANs with a
gateway server specifically.

I'm in the same boat that Bill Niemeyer is in (and for the record, the
bit on Alison's site does *not* provide a solution).  If you're using a
router at work, the solution is relatively simple - just use NAT.  A
friend of mine uses a router on his ISDN line and had to upgrade his
firmware to correctly enable NAT, but it works fine now.  If you're going
thru a gateway box (like me) you have to find a way to do NAT.

BTW, Bill never mentioned what OS he's using in his gateway machine (if
that in fact is what he's using).  A couple of Papy guys are trying to
find a resolution and even maybe a software change to make it easier on
people like me and Bill.

Lastly, I'm using a Linux (kernel 2.0.30) machine as my gateway and am
still looking for a kerenel mod or add-on utility that can help make this
happen.  IP masquerading alone is not enough, or at least not in
this version of the kernel.  I've seen references to port
forwarding being included in newer kernels (ipfwadm) but have't
upgraded mine yet to see if it is sufficient.  When/if I find anything, I
will be sure to a) post it here, and b) let Alison know so she can add it
to her online FAQ.

Yes, I have the same setup and am looking at / trying to get ip auto
forwarding
to work to solve this problem (I am already using masquerading).  I'd have
thought that auto forwarding all traffic from all ports to my GPL PC would at

least work, but it doesn't.  Maybe I am using the command (ipautofw)
incorrectly.

GPL 'Net via LAN Problems - Help?

by Bradley Ye » Mon, 19 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I think I'm having the same problems too (well - kind of).  My configuration
is:

Ethernet network card connected to ADSL modem for internet access.

Second ethernet network card connected to my LAN (so I can share my ADSL
with my other computers).  This one is configured as 192.168.0.1 --- which
is what is listed in GPL's multiplayer setup.

I think my problem could be fixed if GPL listed more than one TCP/IP
connection.

I haven't tried this, but I figure I should be able to play if I remove
TCP/IP from my ethernet card which not connected to the ADSL modem.  That
way I'll have a regular setup.  But, it will be such a hassle when I want to
race on the net.

GPL 'Net via LAN Problems - Help?

I don't have this problem.  I have a machine setup pretty much the same
way (two NIC's - one going to LAN, one going to modem, and it can
host/join just fine.  In fact, it's the only way I can join a multiplayer
game with my "race" system.  I think *your* problem is more a
configuration problem under windows.

Oops... I got it working.  I didn't read the readme.txt part about core.ini
thing which can be used for setups like mine.

GPL 'Net via LAN Problems - Help?

by Randy Cassid » Tue, 20 Oct 1998 04:00:00

GPL will list as many IP addresses as it can find (well, ok, up to 6).  By
default GPL will look in the registry for static IP addresses, and then use
DUN (if it's installed) to find dialup networking addresses.  This method
will miss any dynamic IP addresses assigned via DHCP.  If you use the
alternate IP address lookup (see the readme.txt), GPL will use
gethostname() and gethostbyname(), and then DUN, to find IP addresses.
This alternate method is more comprehensive, but can cause you grief if you
have "connect to the Internet as needed" enabled, and aren't connected when
you start GPL (which is why we don't use it by default).
