GPL on LAN problem

by Rene Feij » Mon, 01 May 2000 04:00:00

I want to connect to the server in the LAN, I can see the IPX node,
but the connection always times out?

Who knows how to solve this problem?

Sounds like you might need to fix the Frame Type on both machines.  Goto
the Control Panel and choose Network.  Now scroll down to the "IPX ->
Ethernet card" lines and .. (ok I have NT at work)  just check for a
list with the word "Frame Type" in it and choose "802.2" for both
sides.  You could also choose "802.3" for both sides but just make sure
both machines have the same setting.

Hope that helps :-)

Jason.

I had a similar problem when i had a lan with 1 pc running a dedicated
server thru vroc.  I could never connect direct, and never did solve the
problem, I always ended up connecting through the internet.

Both comps were on the net of course

GPL on LAN problem

My YouBeTheBoss server has 2 ethernet cards.  1 to the net and 1 to my LAN.
Both cards have TCP/IP and I can connect fine via the LAN.

What I did was... I hosted the normal way and selected both TCP addresses to
receive connections.  Then after that I just made sure the server.ini file had
"allow connections = 1" for both those TCP addresses.  Works slick and I don't
have to install IPX :-)

I was running with a hub, should that make any difference?

GPL on LAN problem

by Jason Mond » Wed, 03 May 2000 04:00:00

The hub is only used to connect computers unless its smart like a Cisco ;-)  In
order to connect directly to the GPL host on a LAN you would need 2 ethernet cards
in the host machine connected to different hubs.  One hub for the internet.  One hub
for your LAN.

 Internet
    |
--------HUB-----------
 |                  |
(200.1.1.1)        (200.1.1.2)     <- Ethernet card #1
 GPLHOST            PC
(172.16.0.1)       (172.16.0.2)    <- Ethernet card #2
 |                  |
--------HUB (LAN)-----

My setup is show above.  In order for your PC to connect to the GPLHOST using the
LAN, both the GPLHOST and PC need 2 ethernet cards (you said both were connected to
the net so I assume that meant a direct connection).

You might have the following setup, which would work too but to connect via LAN
only.

 Internet
    |
 Firewall
    |
--------HUB-----
 |
(200.1.1.1)
GPLHOST            PC
(172.16.0.1)       (172.16.0.2)
 |                  |
--------HUB (LAN)-----

Sounds like you had a network issue Martyn.

well my hook up was thus:

Cable modem connected to HUB, each pc with 1 NIC connected to the hub

i probably did have a network issue, I dunno alot about it

GPL on LAN problem

by Jason Mond » Wed, 03 May 2000 04:00:00

In that senario, you must have had one of the following problems for IPX not to work:

1. IPX was not installed on both machines or
2. They were using the wrong packet type or
3. GPL was not setup to accept IPX connections.

The main benefit of using IPX would be saving a connection for you in a full race.  Warp
really isn't an issue using 3/84 settings on a LAN.

Packet type is the only 1 i'm not sure about, I just reset up the lan,
and possibly this weekend i'll be able to try again

Thanx Jason

GPL on LAN problem

by Mark Fishe » Wed, 03 May 2000 04:00:00

>I was running with a hub, should that make any difference?

I run a server via VROC and connect via TCIP over my LAN, IPX over the LAN
caused discoes for me. In the host screens make sure skip multiplayer screen is
unchecked and you can select both the Net IP and LAN IP to host over in the
multiplayer screen.

I wouldn't have thought a hub made any difference.

Cheers

Mark
