GPL LAN problem

Well, I am *about* to do something like you're talking about, but
haven't yet. Randy Cassidy might be able to help out more than me...
there was another post of the last day or two on IPX and GPL on a Lan
from Randy. Look for it and it may help.

BUT, you should be able to run over a Lan on IP. You all need IP
addresses, obviously, but it should work. Try it and see! :-)

GPL LAN problem

a LAN,
....

I can't imagine what would be booting the clients out of an IPX race.
You can use GPL's TCP/IP network play on a LAN.  You probably want to
make one adjustment, though.  By default, GPL considers TCP/IP
connections to be low-bandwidth, so only a small amount of data is
transmitted to TCP/IP clients.  You can tell GPL to default to
considering TCP/IP connections to be high-bandwidth with an entry in
core.ini.  To avoid transcription mistakes, detach the attached text
file into GPL's home directory.  If any of these machines will also be
used for Internet play, and will be connected to the Internet through
some mechanism other than a plain-old modem, you'll want to comment out
this entry when running on the Internet (just put a semicolon (;) at
the start of the second line).

GPL LAN problem

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this.

My two friends and I have been trying to get GPL to run reliably over a LAN,
but we can't even finish a pro-short race without someone being booted back
to the Win98 desktop. The host is always OK but one or usually both of the
"joiners" gets the boot during practice or the race.

We tried different combinations of host and "joiners", 2 or 3 computers, IPX
settings etc. It's always the same result. Our systems are virtually
identical and our PCI network cards are identical. None of us has a core.ini
file. Can we use TCP/IP or is that just for online play?

We have no problems running Quake2, NFS3, X-Wing V TIE fighter, AOE etc. for
hours on end, so I don't think the network is the problem. All three
machines run single races with 19 cars and full graphics at 800x600 with 37+
FPS all day long without a problem.

System specs are your usual Saturday Night Special:

64Mb ram
BH6
generic Voodoo 2
PCI network card
Win 98

Needless to say, we got these machines just to play GPL. Talk about steep
hardware requirements! : and we used to complain about GP2 on our P200s :~)

Anyway, if someone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Derek.

GPL LAN problem

Randy,

I too experience this exact same problem when running IPX games on my
10baseT LAN at home.  We have been playing games recently with TCP/IP and
not suffering the same disconnect problems.

What is the best setting in core.ini for hosting TCP/IP games with a cable
modem?

The host machine in question is a PII450 with Voodoo2 SLI and 128MB of RAM.

Thanks in advance.

Brad.

of RAM.

Someone that has been hosting races with a cable modem could probably
give you a better idea than I could (I just have a lowly 28.8 at home
:-(

Check to insure you have the same "frame type" in your network properties.

I host  tcp/ip with ipx together without problems using "EthernetII" in
the ipx
advanced properties.

We have been racing GPL on a 3 PC Ethernet LAN without any problems.
All three GPL's without core.ini LAN settings (only OpenGL settings),
and all three PC's with default IPX settings.
