GPL Freezes - Which way now?

by M. Connoll » Thu, 01 Feb 2001 20:17:50

Hi,

I use a P3-500, 64MB, V3, SB Live & LWFF for GPL.  The system seems fast enough
to run with most "goodies" on,  but I'm living with some annoying glitches.

From the beginning I was suffering texture corruption - usually a "snowy" track
or terrain.  At first I assumed this was just a driver issue and I upgraded a
few times from 3dfxgamer.com

But the problem persists.  Right now I'm using the retail release for the V3
from last November (I think) - I quit upgrading the driver as it didn't seem to
make any difference. The problem comes and goes - seems most frequent at Spa for
some reason.

I also get screen freezes,  especially during VROC races (and usually on the
last lap!).  I am always careful to kill all background apps,  but of course it
could be swapfile related.

I'm happy with my frame rates but I'm losing patience with these glitches,  and
am seriously considering splashing out on a V5 in an effort to solve them.  I
love GPL track graphics and it seems a shame to switch them off!

Am I "thinking wrong"?  Would an upgrade to 128MB RAM help?  Will I get the best
out of a V5 with a P500?  Am I paying $150 just for FSAA? Is it a driver thing
after all?

Your advice would be appreciated.

Michael.

Well, i can't help for your freezes, but if you have to upgrade i recomand you a
GeForce + D3D Patch, that is IMO the best solution , very good gfx and constant
36fps with every thing on ( Athlon 600+GeForce DDR ).

"Upgrade to 128Mb"?
RAM is so cheap now that an upgrade to (at least) 256Mb must be the
first thing to do for any cost-effective upgrade, surely?
Espec. if any suspicion of swapfile pauses.

Sometimes we have to ask VERY basic questions.  I apologize if this has
already been covered.  Have you updated GPL to the v1.21?   The patch is
available at www.papy.com and somebody in another thread posted a direct
link to that patch.

That's a pretty unusual problem to be having with GPL, particularly on a V3.
There are definitely lots of V3 drivers out there that run GPL flawlessly,
which suggests maybe it's not the drivers.  If you have a non-intel chipset
motherboard (say VIA or something) then it could be the AGP drivers, or it
could be faulty RAM, or even a faulty video card or motherboard.  That's
just guess work though, I certainly wouldn't go throwing money at the
problem until you're sure what's wrong.

I don't suppose you can try the suspect parts in another PC can you?  That's
the only way to be sure.

Really, theres loads of things that could cause this kind of problem.  I
presume you aren't overclocking either the video card, CPU, or AGP slot.
And check you haven't got any old glide files*** around in your GPL
folder, except the one that should be there.

Maybe it would be worth trying a fresh install of GPL (in a new folder so
you don't lose your current install) ?   Lastly if your current V3 drivers
support HSR (hidden surface removal) then turn it off.

Yes,  it's been patched from Day 1.  An earlier poster pointed out that a RAM
upgrade is a no-brainer these days,  and that's undoubtedly true.

I just can't see how that's going to help with the texture problems.  I'm
guessing that the 16MB on the V3 is more of a limitation in this regard.  Am I
wrong?

Nope - Dell system couldn't be more Wintel-compliant (obsequious?)

Possible,  but with 64MB I'd expect to see problems elsewhere

...couldn't agree more  ;-)

Not an option (at the moment anyway)

Nope,  though I have suspected overheating from time to time.  Problems seem
more pronounced the longer I spend at the wheel.  Maybe I'll try running it
with the cover off.  CTTOI,  I should check that the V3 fan is working...

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond.

(From the earlier poster)
I know I don't properly understand it, but I _think_ the VGA memory is
mapped into your main memory (and that's what the Aperture Size
setting is in BIOS?).
So if you've got less than 128M now (64M?), then 16M of that is
unavailable to you as its used for graphics. Sort of. I think.

There's no way that having a 16MB card is affecting GPL in any way.  GPL
runs perfectly on a 16MB V3.  It also runs perfectly on a 12MB V2.  It even
runs, although slowly, on a 4 MB V1.  And lack of texture memory would only
ever effect speed, it would never cause corruption of textures.

Mine  is  a  PII-350  w/64mb ram, V3-3000AGP, SB  Live  and  I  dont
have these problems.  I  run  gpl  at  1024  and  have  the  replay
memory  set  to  20000.   I'm  using  July  99  drivers  for  the
V3.   So  I  doubt  it  is  a  ram  or  driver  issue.   Make  sure
the  glide  settings  are  all  off  and  the  image  quality  is  at
auto  in  3fdx  tweaks.   Dont  know  if  it matters  but  I  have
the  desktop  set  to  16  bit  hi  color.   An  overheated  V3  will
cause  texture  corruption  so  trying it  with  the  cover  off  is
a  good  idea.   My  card  seemed  to  run  hot  so  I  added  a  card
cooler  and  a  slot  fan.

V3 texture corruption is completely fixed with the "GPL Override = 1"
glide.ini wrapper option.  This also eliminates the endless mode-switching
when going from track to menus.  Don't forget the mirrorupdate=2 for
framerate boost.  Download it, Use it, Love it!

What type of framerate do you get, with which graphics options?  Your system is
slower than mine, and I'm looking for a comparison..

True, but GPL patch 1.2 also fixes the same problem, and MC said he's
running 1.2.
