i have elimated my problem to either
Orchid Nusound 3D (an aureal vortex based sound card)
or
MAtrox G100 (2d card)
if anyone has been able to play/not play GPL with either of these two items
please let me know so that i can isolate the problem

You should be able to determine this yourself. Disable your soundcard
in the Systems Device Manager and then reboot windows and see if GPL
will run. If it does there may be some driver issues with your
soundcard, if it doesn't then the problem more than likely is some other
component or setting on your system.

I'm using a Matrox G100 here (8Mb) also a Techworks voodoo2 12Mb
card, and I have no probs at all, (using latest drivers), I think
GPL uses the Voodoo2 though rather than the G100 though?
I would think your problem is either dx6 or your voodoo2 drivers?
