Sorry if done B4, but GPL and Geforce - HOW??

by chainbreake » Sun, 30 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I haven't been able to get any of the 5.x drivers to work correctly with my
Geforce and GPL.  In all resolutions except 640x, I get a partial, reduced
image.

I get good results with the 3.77 drivers.  I use all the settings you
mention, plus turn off vertical sync.  My in-game settings use 1280x res,
cars only in mirrors, and all other graphics details on, and on max detail.
With a P3/800 that gives me frame rates that briefly drop to the mid 20s at
the start of a race and stay above 30 all the rest of the time on all
tracks--even Monaco.  Make sure you are using the latest GPL "b" opengl
"patch".

Oh, and DX 7.0a.

I've never had a CTD in GPL using the 3.77 drivers and those settings.

Sorry in advance to the regulars that have probably been through
this a thousand times, but how the hell do you get GPL to work with a
Geforce?? Which drivers? What driver settings? What detail levels in
GPL? I keep getting lockups!!!

    I've tried 3.68, 3.84, 5.13, and 5.14 drivers...
I've tried block transfer, 1st five settings ticked, and set to
16-bit only in the drivers
I've tried nearly every combo of detail settings

--- I haven't tried every single combonation of the above (that's why
I'm asking these q's now, instead of wasting a couple of days)....

Thank to anyone that can help

Have you installed the GPL 1.2 patch?
Have you installed the Papy OpenGL Beta 2 patch?
Both are available from the Pits: http://www.theuspits.com/

I had the same problem with the lockups. I've tried every possible
combination of drivers and settings I could think of but with no joy. It
looks great on GeForce by on some tracks the graphics just lock up ( you can
still hear the car diving around). I've now given up and gone back to my
good old Voodoo 2s in SLI and I'm happy again. I think I'm just unlucky with
the lockups.

I'd still love to know if anybody has a solution but until then Voodoo is
still the best card for GPL (it is faster anyway)

OK, I've fixed it. After playing around with various settings to get
other games working under Win2000 on a different partition, I changed my
AGP Apeture size to 4 (was at 64), and now it works perfectly with any
drivers (well, I've tried 3.68 and 5.14).
So for anyone else having problems with GPL and OGL cards, try setting
your AGP apature size  in your bios to the lowest available......

Thanks, I changed my AGP aperture to 4mb and hey presto it works! no more
crashes (apart from me overcooking it into a corner as usual)
I use the latest 5.16 drivers which don't let you play in anything higher
than 640x480 so I dropped the 3.77 nvopengl.dll file into the gpl directory
and now it's fine at 1280x1024 (even 1600x1200). I switched the mirror
refresh down to every 3 frames and it's much faster. I now get 36 fps all
the time except for the start (with 19 cars) when it goes down to 12-15 fps.

Hoorah I can now put my V2's back in my old machine and invite my friends
round to get trashed.

The only problem is that most other games run like a tranquilised deer with
the AGP apeture at 4mb. Quake 3 runs in fits and starts, and Homeworld looks to
be at about 3 fps. Oh well - reboot, change bios, play GPL, reboot, change bios,
play other games!!

Other Games (Sims)? What are you talking about?

Hi
Aren't you supposed to set AGP aperture to 1/5 you available ram?

Setting AGP aperture to anything under 8mb affectively disables AGP but it
can help with crashing problems and shouldn't affect performance in gpl
because the textures are so small.
You could also try disabling sidebanding and turning the AGP down to 1x with
powerstrip.
