Geforce, 3Dfx and GPL - Slightly off topic

Geforce, 3Dfx and GPL - Slightly off topic

Yo!

I love Grand Prix Legends. But after buying CL Annihilator Geforce Pro, I
realize that GPL is a Glide based game. Now the game don't work properly.
I've installed the OpenGL patch, but I'm still not satisfied.

Questions:

1. Is it possible to run a 3Dfx card in a PCI slot, along with the Geforce?

2. Can I alternate between two graphics cars?

3. If the answer to question 1 and 2 is yes: Can i use two monitors, one for
each graphic card (I have Win 98)?

This Geforce is about to be expensive....

Just out of interest, what frame rate do you get with the GeForce and what
is the spec of your PC? Also, Have you turned the mirror refresh down (this
affects the OpenGL speed a lot I hear)?

If you want to 2 monitors, you can get a Voodoo3 2000/3000 PCI card.  From
the reviews, these cards are not that much slower than their Voodoo3 AGP
counterparts and with Win98, and you can have 2 monitors.

I kind of overlooked that you have a creative, get their beta glide here,
but you need your cards serial #

My system:

PII350
Nvidia 3.65 "Athlon only" reference drivers
192 Mb RAM
Abit Bh6
Win 98
8,4 GB HD
CD-ROM
CD-RW

I have turned the mirror refresh down. I have also reduced mirror detail.
Mirrors are absolutely useless in OpenGL. They only kills my FPS.

In GPL I get 13-36 fps in in car view at 800x600. FPS lies around 36 when no
other cars are around. At the starting grid I get around 13 FPS.  This
rather low PFS becomes frustrating at the pile up in the first corner.

FPS are more stable in chase view. But the game itself has become unstable.

If you love your GPL (who doesn't?), stay away from the Geforce.

In my opinion this card has been released too early. The drivers aren't
fully developed yet. In fact the performance with Creative's drivers was
lower than with my old Voodoo Banshee AGP in every game I've tried (except
for in Viper Racing, where they scored equal).

The Geforce has been a disappointment to me. It's benchmarking figures in
the reviews is better than it's performance in real life ***. Because of
the lousy drivers, I think this card is hugely overpriced.

What good does nice benchmarking figures do when your monitor isn't capable
of displaying the high resolutions? What good is 90 FPS in Q3 and UT when
performance is shitty in GPL and Tiger Woods 99, which is the games I'm
currently playing?

I want a card that makes my games perform better, not a card that performs
well in games I don't have, nor want to buy, or isn't even released yet.

Well, It seems like I got carried away here, but I fell ripped off.

Yeah.

But I have a Geforce. The beta program is not available to me. It's only for
TNT & TNT2 owners. Besides, the beta doesn't work with GPL yet.

Thanks anyhow.

Yes - get a cheap Voodoo2 ($120 Australian, probably $50 US?)

Yes - well written games will see "both" cards.

Mmmm... No... You need two primary adapters (I believe???) for dual monitor
support in Win98 - Voodoo2 is an add-on passthrough card...

I plan on getting a new Gforce card so I can get 32bit color and better
framerates it games but I will never get rid of my Voodoo2 Monster3D card
cause it runs other games better like GPL. I think this is the best of both
worlds although 2 Voodoo2's in SLI along with a Gforce would be the ultimate
setup, don't you think? I've read you can pick up Voodoo2's for about
$50-70.

Is that OpenGlide thing a kind of emulator for OpenGL based chipsets?

1. Yep, I am having a good o' Canopus Pure3D2 V2 card with my CL
GeForce Proand I can switch between them. I m using P2-450 and
GeForce Pro give ~30 fps during practice in 1024x768 OpenGL.
But I somehow still prefer the 3dfx mode. It looks a tag better.

2. I am not sure about your question.

3. Why? I don't think GPL support such mode (and I am not sure
if any current game support this one).

Well, GeForce is pretty good and it is a major step forward to
V2, especially if you use a lot of OpenGL software. Not until
software support transformation and lighting acceleration,
GeForce may be a tag too expensive for its price.

Griffin.

You said you have a  PII350 and an Abit BH6...ever tried overclocking it?
It's suprising what some of them will do...my 350/BH6 has been running at
466 MHz for almost a year now! (And now at 2.1v instead of 2.2!)
