GPL: OpenGL Patch and GeForce Problems

by agar.. » Tue, 30 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I have this configuration working, with one
significant problem (beyond the "normal" mirrors
issue) - modes greater than 640x480 suffer from
very bad flickering (similar to the mirrors
flickering). I've read about a this in the
context of TNT cards elsewhere on the net, where
the fix was to use the lastest Detonator drivers
and enable "block transfer". I'm using driver
version 3.62 (the "special" version for use with
Athlon processors) and the problem still occurs.
The "block transfer" config setting makes things
much worse - the screen is completely messed up
with that turned on.

Help please? Anyone got this working? It's very
frustrating as the framerate looks silky smooth
even with 1600x1200 (my Athlon is a 700).

Thanks, Andy

We've said over and over and over again.  If GPL is your priority,
then 3dfx is your fix.  I know the GE is faster in Quake III, I know it
does the big textures, and I know about the 32bit color.  But for GPL,
and possibly N3/Nl...3dfx is a better choice.  Why does everybody keep
tripping over the obvious?

If I was moaning about performance, then you'd be right.  But the
GeForce is *comfortably* managing 36fps at 1600x1200, on all tracks,
with 19 opponents.  I feel that I *might* be one config setting/
driver patch away from GPL nirvana.

Besides, having just spent 2 grand on a new system, I can't afford
a 3dfx card as well ;-)

Cheers,
Andy

Hi,

Someone told me that he had success with GPL and
a TNT2 on Windows 2000. I guess the OpenGL ICD drivers
for Win2000 are much better then the W9x versions.

So, if you're able to try Win2000, try it....

That 36 FPS, is due to the Athlon 700, not your video card.
GPL is more processor intensive than video intensive, you'd be getting 36FPS
with a Voodoo3 2000, with your Athlon 700.

I have no idea of this will work or not, but if your GeForce is the Creative
Labs Annihilator, you might be able to try their Unified Driver beta for the
3DFX Glide API(which is what GPL uses).  From the Creative Labs website:

"The Unified Driver allows Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT and 3D Blaster RIVA
TNT2 Ultra owners to run many of the games which support 3D acceleration
only via the Glide? API. "

This does state for TNT and TNT2 so it may not help with the GeForce, but
they are all nvidia chipsets.  Go here if you want to check it out.

GPL is reported to "Fail" as it kicks back to the desktop
according to their list.

When you say comfortably managing 36 fps, do you mean with mirrors
refreshing at full speed?

If the problem doesn't happen in all modes, then it's doubtful that
you can fix it with a config tweak.  After all, you've got the
exact same config in 640x480, which works.  But twiddle every
OpenGL-related slider anyway.

If that doesn't work, play at 640x480 and try each new Nvidia
driver version until one fixes the problem.  See
http://zoiah.cjb.net for links to "unofficial" driver versions.

If you really can't stand 640x480 or waiting, find a cheap Voodoo 2.
Creative was selling 8 MB cards for $19 and 12 MB cards for $29.
If they're sold out again, look for a used one.

A couple of updates to this:
Bad: I installed a Voodoo2 card from my old machine and although the
graphic quality and framerate was good (at 1024x768) I experienced lots
of crashes (whole machine) going to and from menus. I tried numerous
Glide versions (including the new Beta reference drivers which are
supposedly fixed for DX7). I gave up.

Very good: workaround for the GeForce flickering - pressing F2 for
replay and then escaping straight back clears up the flickering for the
duration of that session. A workaround I'm perfectly happy with. Note
that the mirrors still flicker, but I tend to use the rollbar view
anyway.  I get 36fps at 1600x1200 with max detail and FF so I'm a happy
bunny now :-)

What's your CPU and how much ram do you have?  I have a P2-400, 128MB, with a
single voodoo2 card, and I can't decide if I should get a TNT2-Ultra or if the
extra money for a geforce would be worth it.  My CPU might be maxed out on the
TNT2-ultra already.

I've got an Athlon 700 which I suspect is largely responsible
for the frame rate (at least for GPL).  So I wouldn't bother
getting a GeForce if I were you.
